FORGETFUL Geelong library members are being forgiven for their shortcomings between November and December, with all fines waived in return for the donation of non-perishable food items during this period. <\/p>\n
More than two metric tonnes of food was acquired during the 2019 Food for Fines appeal, an initiative which sees a worldwide network of libraries eliminate fines in return for donations.<\/p>\n
The food donated during the appeal was forwarded to the Geelong Food Relief Centre, a not-for-profit organisation which assists local people experiencing food insecurity. <\/p>\n
The recent campaign ran from November 18 to December 13 and saw a record 2,205 kilograms of food collected at library branches \u2013 635 kilograms more than the previous year (2018). <\/p>\n
City of Greater Geelong councillor Ron Nelson, chair of the Geelong Regional Library Corporation, said it was wonderful to see the community rally together for people in need. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Food for Fines campaign provides an easy and practical way for local people to support a worthwhile cause in the lead up to the festive season. <\/p>\n
\u201cOffering amnesty from overdue book fines in exchange for food donations is a simple idea, but the incredible results we have seen this year prove just what a successful campaign it is.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very grateful to our library members for donating so generously and embracing the spirit of giving this Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n
