A GROUP of Deakin medical students recently completed a ride across the country to raise funds for charity that researches and treats mental illness.<\/p>\n

\n

The 12 students covered 3,300km riding from Geelong to Fremantle over the course of 16 days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Their efforts have helped raise more than $55,000 for the Black Dog Institute, with donations still coming in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ride organiser Joey Coote said in addition to the money raised, the conversations the ride initiated were incredibly valuable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe most rewarding part was the conversations we had with locals and fellow travellers. People who may not have many opportunities to discuss their mental wellbeing seemed to open up and share their struggles. It was humbling to be an outlet, however fleeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Leo Lambers was another one of the cyclists to undertake the mammoth journey. He said he was also amazed at how people responded to the ride, both those who sponsored it and the people they met on the journey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOur initial target was $30,000. We just had an overwhelming response from our friends and family and even people we didn\u2019t know. Anytime we were wearing our logo or our kits, people would always chat with you about it right away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt was quite interesting the people you wouldn\u2019t have necessarily thought of to do so opened up along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr Lambers said the ride itself was a challenging but rewarding experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt got hot towards the end as we entered WA. The last six days of the ride were well above 30 degrees and not quite as enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n
