THE City of Greater Geelong is encouraging women to get moving next month as part of the state government\u2019s This Girl Can campaign. <\/p>\n

The council is offering grants of up to $400 for sporting clubs and community groups to host beginner sessions for women and girls between March 23-29, coinciding with This Girl Can week. <\/p>\n

Each year the initiative aims to inspire women of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and body shapes to increase their physical activity alongside like-minded people. <\/p>\n

According to the city\u2019s Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2018-2021, more than half of region fails to meet physical activity guidelines and about 12 per cent are considered sedentary.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the campaign was an important step to encourage females in Geelong to make time to be more active. <\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of someone\u2019s personal level of fitness, it\u2019s critically important that everyone makes time for exercise and being active.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt improves mental and physical health, which makes life so much more fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grant applications to host a come and try session, or similar, are open until February 17.<\/p>\n

Eligible community groups must tailor their programs for gentle participation and open the experience to all residents.<\/p>\n

Cr Pat Murnane, chair of the city\u2019s health, wellbeing and safety portfolio, said the council encouraged all local sporting and recreation clubs and community groups to take up the opportunity and provide a way for women and girls to get involved in physical activity.<\/p>\n
