OLDER residents in the Geelong region are being encouraged to apply for a spot on the City of Greater Geelong\u2019s Ageing Well Advisory Committee. <\/p>\n

The committee\u2019s establishment was given the green light by council in December, with Cr Pat Murnane appointed chair.<\/p>\n

Up to 12 inaugural members will be asked to draw on their life experiences to shape \u201can age-friendly community\u201d, advise on policy and inform the development of the city\u2019s Ageing Well Strategy. <\/p>\n

Cr Murnane said the committee was a chance for older people to make a difference towards improving their opportunities. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs the greater Geelong community ages, it\u2019s imperative council and other levels of government increase the availability of appropriate services, to suit the various needs of older residents.<\/p>\n

Applicants must be over 55 years of age, live or work in the municipality and be able to attend at least four meetings annually.<\/p>\n

Among the committee will be four participants of the city\u2019s Community Care program and four community members.<\/p>\n

Each role will be voluntary and aim to represent diverse perspectives of the region on matters of social inclusion, participation and aged services.<\/p>\n

The committee will initially operate over two years, with the option to continue if required.<\/p>\n

Applications to join the initiative are open from now until March 1.<\/p>\n
