ONE of Geelong\u2019s most historically significant sporting venues will host elite tennis players from Australia and abroad from Sunday, March 8.<\/p>\n
Held at the Geelong Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC), the City of Greater Geelong Tennis International will make up part of the Australian Pro Tour.<\/p>\n
GLTC president Bob Spurling said he was delighted the club had been given the support to hold such a high-profile event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will be the most prestigious tournament we have hosted since the Davis Cup (in 2012) and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity by Tennis Australia to deliver the event on our excellent natural grass courts.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we are essentially a volunteer-driven club, we are indebted to Geelong Major Events for their financial support which has made it possible for us to provide the resources to run such an event in conjunction with Tennis Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Competitors in the event compete for world ranking points and $25,000 prize money.<\/p>\n
City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said she was pleased the city was given the opportunity to host the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to have the Pro Tour coming to Geelong, giving us the chance to see the rising stars of Australian tennis in action.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 138-year-old Geelong Lawn Tennis Club will be a beautiful venue for players and spectators, and we look forward to welcoming them to our city.\u201d<\/p>\n
