{"id":30955,"date":"2020-03-19T15:03:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T05:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/stimulus-measures-to-support-home-building\/"},"modified":"2020-03-19T15:34:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T05:34:25","slug":"stimulus-measures-to-support-home-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/real-estate\/stimulus-measures-to-support-home-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Stimulus measures to  support home building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE federal government has pledged $1.3 billion to support keeping apprentices employed by providing small businesses up to $21,000 per apprentice to subsidise apprentice wages by around 50 per cent, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hia.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Housing Industry Association<\/a> (HIA) has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s chief economist Tim Reardon said the HIA welcomed the stimulus package, particularly the support provided for apprentices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese measures announced will assist in stimulating household demand and prevent a further slowdown in building activity,\u201d Mr Reardon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApprentice employment is typically an early casualty during periods of economic downturn and this support for small businesses will ensure that fewer are lost during this cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe residential building industry has contracted by around 20 per cent from its peak during the May 2018 quarter and most indicators showed an improvement in conditions in the second half of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia is emerging from a residential building downturn and in the face of constraints on trade and tourism, stability and clear direction to ensure the housing market does not take a backwards step is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the construction industry employed more than 1.1 million people, with residential building work generating more than $105 billion for the Australian economy in 2018 and accounting for 5.8 per cent of expenditure in the Australian economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extension of the instant asset write off scheme to businesses with a turnover of up to $500 million, and to an asset value of up to $150,000, will also assist small businesses in the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar measures enabling accelerated depreciation have been effective in increasing capital investment in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE federal government has pledged $1.3 billion to support keeping apprentices employed by providing small businesses up to $21,000 per apprentice to subsidise apprentice wages by around 50 per cent, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) has confirmed.
