These will include thyroid, prostate, hernia and gynaecological surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was important to be proactive in dealing with the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our hospitals have been planning for this pandemic to ensure they have the capacity to deal with an influx of patients with COVID-19 and ensure the continued safety of staff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This elective surgery blitz will not only help our hospitals get ready for the peak of the pandemic, but also help thousands of Victorian patients to receive treatment sooner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Public and private hospitals being given $60 million to carry out these additional surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>The government has also given a further $10 million to provide extra protective equipment for healthcare workers, including masks, gloves and gowns.<\/p>\n<p>Premier Daniel Andrews said elective surgeries not completed before coronavirus patients began to fill hospital beds may be delayed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that when the COVID-19 pandemic reaches its peak, our hospitals are going to be busier than ever, so it makes sense to get as many patients as possible in for elective surgery now, while we still can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The latest information on the coronavirus can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/dhhs.vic.gov.au\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dhhs.vic.gov.au\/coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE state government recently announced they will be fast-tracking people scheduled for elective surgery in the coming weeks to provide create space for coronavirus patients.
