TORQUAY’S Anzac Day dawn service and march to Point Danger have been cancelled for the first time in their history.<\/p>\n
Torquay Returned Service League (RSL) president Bob Tyler said the decision was made in line with RSL Victoria.<\/p>\n
“In the interests of community health at this time, RSL Victoria has decreed that no services will be held for the community this year.<\/p>\n
“RSL Sub-Branches across Victoria have been asked to conduct a single ANZAC Day commemorative service only. The public is being asked not to attend these services.”<\/p>\n
While people are urged to practice social distancing, they are still able to place wreaths or poppies at the memorial.<\/p>\n
The flags at Point Danger will also be lowered to half-mast to recognise those who died or were wounded while serving their country.<\/p>\n
The Surf Coast Shire council generally assists with the ANZAC Day ceremony through financial contributions and management of traffic.<\/p>\n
The shire’s general manager of environment and development Ransce Salan said the council was in communication with Torquay RSL to ensure the best outcome was reached.<\/p>\n
“Council has met with the Torquay RSL to discuss their revised plans to commemorate Anzac Day this year given the current situation. The Torquay RSL will update Council with plans for their Anzac commemoration when they are finalised.”<\/p>\n
RSL Victoria president Robert Webster said people could still show their respects without gathering in the traditional way.<\/p>\n
“The RSL is asking that instead you tune in via radio, social media or television and take a moment to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our veterans and those who are still serving today.<\/p>\n
“The most important thing is that together we remember our pledge as a nation; Lest We Forget.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
