{"id":31495,"date":"2020-04-09T00:23:36","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T14:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/sustained-focus-city-seeks-feedback-on-sustainability-framework\/"},"modified":"2020-04-10T10:13:19","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T00:13:19","slug":"city-feedback-sustainability-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/city-feedback-sustainability-framework\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustained focus: City seeks feedback on Sustainability Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong council is encouraging the community to think beyond the coronavirus and put in their thoughts about the city\u2019s Sustainability Framework and Action Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The council resolved in February to adopt the framework, which the city says will integrate sustainability principles across all council operations, leading to a potential reduction in carbon emissions and an increase in community resilience to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The action plan to implement the framework sets out several priority and other actions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recognising climate change as a global emergency<\/li>\n<li>Developing and endorsing a Sustainability Policy<\/li>\n<li>Adopting a globally recognised reporting framework and<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating several of its strategies, such as a Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy and Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Submissions were originally set to close this Saturday, April 11, but this has been extended to April 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really looking for a lot of community input into this,\u201d Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said.<\/p>\n<p>She said while the \u201cimmediacy\u201d of the coronavirus might have everyone\u2019s attention now, it was important to keep long-term issues such as sustainability in mind as the response would directly affect many of the city\u2019s most-used functions and services, such as how its footpaths and playgrounds were created.<\/p>\n<p>The framework defines sustainability as \u201cworking together so our environment, community and economy are resourced for the challenges now and into the future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Asher said she preferred a slightly different definition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like \u2018corporate endurance\u2019 instead; we\u2019re actually talking about survival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe companies and organisations with the best corporate endurance are the ones that will do the best financially in what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Martin Cutter said sustainability was a \u201cmindset\u201d the council would have to adopt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a council, sustainability is something we all should be working towards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To read the Sustainability Framework and Action Plan and complete a survey, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/geelongaustralia.com.au\/yoursay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">geelongaustralia.com.au\/yoursay<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong council is encouraging the community to think beyond the coronavirus and put in their thoughts about the city\u2019s Sustainability Framework and Action Plan.
