THERE has been a slight easing of restrictions on people\u2019s movement in the City of Greater Geelong as the state government continues to try to limit the spread of the coronavirus
\nAs of 11.59pm on Tuesday this week, a fifth reason for leaving home has been added – it is now okay to visit family and friends, with up to five visitors allowed at a home and groups of no more than 10 if meeting outdoors.
\nIn line with the statewide changes to restrictions, the City of Greater Geelong council will open public access to a range of outdoor spaces this week, including boating ramps, piers and jetties, golf courses, tennis and basketball courts, equestrian centres, and beaches, including Eastern Beach Reserve.
\nUnder the new guidelines, people are permitted to gather in groups of 10 on the beach or park, as long as people maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from each other at all times.
\nThe city is moving quickly to put in place necessary safety measures to allow its directly-operated golf courses (Lara and Balyang) and public equestrian centre to open tomorrow (Friday, May 14).
\nPeople cannot use playgrounds, skate parks, outdoor gym equipment, public barbecues, drinking fountains and fish cleaning tables, all of which remain closed
\n\u201cThe announcements made by the Victorian Government today mark the first step on the journey towards a way of living we\u2019re used to \u2013 albeit there is still quite some way to go,\u201d Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said.
\n\u201cThank you very much to all members of the Greater Geelong community for adhering to the restrictions so far.
\n\u201cWe know it has been extremely difficult, but your efforts have landed us in a relatively good place.\u201d
\nUp to 10 people will now be allowed to attend weddings and 20 can gather for funerals.
\nHowever, the state of emergency in Victoria (which expired on Monday) has been extended until at least May 31.
