{"id":32462,"date":"2020-05-28T00:04:54","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T14:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=32462"},"modified":"2020-06-01T13:11:19","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T03:11:19","slug":"full-steam-ahead-for-mini-railway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/full-steam-ahead-for-mini-railway\/","title":{"rendered":"Full steam ahead for miniature railway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE tracks and train might be pint-sized but the enjoyment and pleasure Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railways (PBMR) brings children and families is immeasurable.<br \/>\nPMBR president Brian Coleman said the group\u2019s members were all volunteers and a recent $3,000 grant from the federal government \u2013 part of $64,170 in funding to 31 volunteer organisations in the Corangamite electorate \u2013 would go towards running the experience.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re the only miniature railway in the Geelong-Bellarine region. We pride ourselves on being able to afford families an unforgettable experience that won\u2019t cost them the bank.<br \/>\n\u201cLike all clubs and voluntary organisations, the coronavirus has impacted our organisation. It\u2019s shut off our income stream, we were struggling beforehand and now we\u2019ve missed several months of income including the Easter period.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re approaching winter, so the grant means that we can buy new uniforms for our members, name badges and update our radio system. It might be a minor amount of money for some but for us, it\u2019s a lot.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Coleman spent his career as a professional lineman working on the tracks, and like most PBMR volunteers, said a passion for trains landed him at the miniature railway.<br \/>\n\u201cAll of our volunteers love trains, we get great enjoyment seeing the kids enjoying themselves, they equate the mini-track to a Thomas the Tank Engine they can ride on.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have a reputation of being a friendly group and that\u2019s what we pride ourselves on. We\u2019re right by the sea, there\u2019s a playground, and families can picnic at Point Richards.\u201d<br \/>\nPauline Nunan from Compassionate Hearts on the Bellarine said the organisation would spend their $2,000 grant on reimbursing police checks, and purchasing a \u201cgood smart phone for our coordinator\u201d to make things \u201ca little easier\u201d.<br \/>\nVictorian Senator Sarah Henderson said groups would receive the grants to support the work of their volunteers.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile the work of our volunteers may be unpaid, it is not unrecognised. From fighting bushfires, delivering food to vulnerable Australians in isolation and helping out with the weekend sport, they are all local champions.<br \/>\n\u201cTheir contribution is vital to ensuring that we continue to support families, provide employment pathways for young people and strengthen community resilience.\u201d<br \/>\nThe funding injection coincides with National Volunteer Week, which was celebrated from May 18-24.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s vital we acknowledge the important contribution of our local volunteers,\u201d Senator Henderson said.<br \/>\nIf you would like to make a donation to PBMR they\u2019ve set up a GoFundMe page.
