{"id":33131,"date":"2020-07-02T09:34:46","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T23:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=33131"},"modified":"2020-07-02T10:01:44","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T00:01:44","slug":"racing-to-great-heights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/racing-to-great-heights\/","title":{"rendered":"Racing to great heights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>XAVIER Williams might only be 13 but it hasn\u2019t stopped him riding in the U15 age division and placing third in the Victorian Downhill Series (VDHS) competition.<br \/>\nThe 2019\/2020 series was held over three rounds between November and February, with two rounds cancelled due to bushfires and the coronavirus, resulting in Xavier\u2019s third place.<br \/>\n\u201cThis was his first season of the VDHS, and even though it was cut short he still managed to place out of about 60 competitors,\u201d dad Brad said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe first round was in Barjarg (near Mansfield), round two was in Narbethong, and round three took place in Baw Baw. The Mt Buller and Mt Beauty rounds were cancelled.\u201d<br \/>\nFor the Williams family, riding is something they enjoy together with regular outings for Xavier to get practice in.<br \/>\n\u201cWe try as much as we can to all get out there and ride, Xavier\u2019s sister Tatum who\u2019s 10 wants to ride as well and race a series. She rides the trials and spends the day out on the lift<br \/>\nwith us.\u201d<br \/>\nDuring competition Mr Williams said his son is pretty relaxed, listening to music between rounds, sitting quietly and just \u201czones himself out\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s in Year 8 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellarinesc.vic.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Bellarine Secondary College<\/a> and started racing BMX in Geelong when he was about six, this was his first year in the competitive mountain bike realm.\u201d<br \/>\nFor Xav, riding\u2019s more than just a hobby, it\u2019s a lifestyle; and he\u2019s got big ambitions for the future.<br \/>\n\u201cI love riding, the atmosphere of the spectators and other riders cheering you down the course, along with the adrenaline of riding fast down steep technical tracks, it\u2019s awesome,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone involved with downhill racing is really supportive and give you lots of advice. It\u2019s my dream to race the World Cup series, as well as compete in big free ride events like Brendan Fairclough does.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd for proud Brad, he said his son was really excited to have received a place in his first year.<br \/>\n\u201cPart of his ability is to pick the lines and ride off drops, jumps and obstacles I wouldn\u2019t even walk down, let alone try to ride a bike down.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is Xav\u2019s passion and he lives and breathes for it.
