GEELONG is listed alongside the nation\u2019s best tourist destinations in Australian Traveller\u2019s<\/em> \u201c100 Ways to Holiday Here this Year\u201d feature, which has just been released.
\nThe tourism magazine partnered with Tourism Australia on a special feature edition aimed at kickstarting the Australian tourism industry.
\nAustralian Traveller<\/em> gave its editors the challenge to find the greatest \u201cways\u201d Aussies could reconnect with their own country and support the domestic tourism industry at the same time.
\nExperiences across 10 key categories were explored – coast, cities, islands, outback, icons, indigenous, regional, food and wine, family and road trips – to ensure every type of traveller was covered.
\nGeelong is listed at #76 and is included in the Food and Wine category.
\nThe feature suggests visitors take the ferry with Port Phillip Ferries from Melbourne to Geelong, discover The Beach House on Geelong\u2019s waterfront and then venture to Little Malop Street to discover the likes of The Continental, Geelong Cellar Door and The Arborist.
\nTourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine (TGGB) executive director Brett Ince was thrilled Geelong had made the list.
\n\u201cAustralia is an enormous country and we know the breadth of offer and experience across the nation is expansive, so to highlight Geelong in this list among the greatest travel experiences in the best-selling travel magazine in the country is an honour,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cNarrowing the list down to 100 around the country would not have been easy.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s fair to say the tourism industry in Geelong and The Bellarine, like the rest of Australia, has been hit hard by the shutdowns and being recognised on lists like this and bringing attention to our region alongside other iconic Australian destinations is a huge boost.\u201d
\nGeelong and The Bellarine recorded 6.4 million visitors last year and the tourism industry is worth $1.1 billion to the region, and TGGB believes a campaign such as this will help to encourage visitors back here.
\n\u201cOur mission is to connect Australians to their next amazing Aussie trip,\u201d Australian Traveller<\/em> <\/a>editor Leigh-Ann Pow said.
