	{"id":33284,"date":"2020-07-09T07:50:36","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T21:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/town-by-town-snapshot-aireys-inlet-3\/"},"modified":"2020-07-09T15:08:55","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T05:08:55","slug":"town-by-town-snapshot-aireys-inlet-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/real-estate\/town-by-town-snapshot-aireys-inlet-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Town by Town Snapshot: Aireys Inlet"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The size of Aireys Inlet is about 20.2 square kilometres with the population recorded at 714 in 2011 and by the 2016 Census the population was 808 showing a population growth of 13.2 per cent in the area during that time.<\/h3>\n<p>Aireys Inlet is a popular coastal hamlet between Anglesea and Lorne on the iconic Great Ocean Road.<br \/>\nThe inlet receives river waters from iron bark forests of the Otway State Forest and from several streams which rise in the Angahook Forest Park.<br \/>\nIn 1839, John Airey took up a pastoral run near Point Roadknight, east of the inlet and by 1842 his holding expanded along the coast beyond the inlet and was named the Angahook\/Angohawk Run.<br \/>\nIt is probable that Aireys Inlet is named after him, although his brother George was a Commissioner for Crown Lands in the Geelong district, 1839-44.<br \/>\nIn 1887 the relatively inaccessible inlet area was subdivided and about one hundred blocks were sold.<br \/>\nIn 1890 the construction of a lighthouse was begun on the site known as Eagle\u2019s Nest Point (renamed Split Point in 1913).<br \/>\nThe heritage listed lighthouse, 100 metres above sea level, is made of cement-rendered concrete.<br \/>\nA post office and the Grand Hotel opened in 1893 and 1894 with agricultural and pastoral activities supported the village.<br \/>\nAccess to Aireys Inlet, however, was by travel along the beach from Lorne at low tide or by road over the mountainous Otway Ranges.<br \/>\nIn 1905 a survey disclosed that a track along the edge of the coast was possible, and its construction was later taken up as a project to employ returned soldiers.<br \/>\nThe Great Ocean Road Trust was formed and the road between Lorne and Anglesea was opened in 1922.<br \/>\nThe<a href=\"https:\/\/www.film.vic.gov.au\/choose-victoria\/locations\/angahook-lorne-state-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> Angahook Lorne State Park<\/a> (22,350 ha) contains heath lands rich in orchids and ground plants, several types of eucalypt forest, meluleuca swamp and a fern gully.<br \/>\nDuring the early 1950s, Australian crime author Arthur Upfield lived at Aireys Inlet and his novel <em>The New Shoe<\/em> (1951) is based on the township and some of its characters drew on local identities.<br \/>\nThe median house price in Aireys Inlet in 1987 was $74,250 and in 1996 it was $140,000.
