Junior football will continue in the wake of yesterday’s (Thursday, July 30) announcement on tightening restrictions for regional Victoria, but spectators are being urged to take extra measures to minimise the risk of transmission.<\/p>\n
Facemasks will be mandatory for all Victorians at 11:59pm on Sunday, August 2 for people outside their home.<\/p>\n
However, in a statement released earlier today, AFL Barwon asked spectators to make the change early.<\/p>\n
“All necessary spectators at matches should wear face coverings ahead of their mandatory introduction.<\/p>\n
“Health advice indicates that face coverings will further assist in maintaining the safety of our venues and members.”<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon conducted a survey this week that saw clubs unanimous in their support for continuing the season. Although, AFL Barwon has reiterated to all clubs that this season is functioning on an ‘opt-in’ model.<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon also noted they were advised in their weekly meeting with the Infectious Disease Department at Barwon Health that the situation remains stable and at present, the health benefits of having juniors playing the sport still outweigh the risks.<\/p>\n
In a statement released earlier today, AFL Barwon stated they are closely monitoring the school closures in the region and “will fully support clubs if any teams are impacted over the coming weekend.”<\/p>\n
