THE state government has announced it will provide all government schools in Victoria with pads and tampons for students to take free of charge.<\/p>\n
The $20.7 million initiative seeks to help families who may be experiencing financial hardships, while also promoting a positive culture around menstrual health.<\/p>\n
Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams said the program would improve general student wellbeing.<\/p>\n
“Getting your period is a normal part of life and sanitary items are a basic necessity. We’re ensuring all girls in our public schools have access to pads and tampons when they need them, so they can focus on their studies.”<\/p>\n
The pads and tampons will be available free of charge in school bathrooms. The program will also include the delivery of important health information to students on how to manage their periods.<\/p>\n
South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said the initiative would help create greater equity among students.<\/p>\n
“We’re proud to be providing free sanitary items in all Victorian government schools to ensure that students \u2013 regardless of their background or circumstances \u2013 can focus and participate fully in their education.<\/p>\n
