THE state government will launch the “It’s Our Time” campaign later this month to encourage more women to be part of local government.<\/p>\n
The campaign will include webinars and other online resources aimed at inspiring women to be candidates in the October elections.<\/p>\n
Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge welcomed the campaign and said greater diversity would ensure councils better represent their\u00a0communities.<\/p>\n
“Right now, just over one-third of all elected representatives throughout Victoria are women. We need to see that figure increase so that councillors all over can truly represent the needs of their communities.<\/p>\n
“While we’ve come a long way, we still have a way to go in achieving equality. I encourage women everywhere who are even just considering running for all levels of government to follow through so that women can be equally represented in decision making.”<\/p>\n
Cr Hodge is one of 32 female mayors in Victoria, which is the most the state has ever had.<\/p>\n
However, there are 13 councils in the state with only one female councillor.<\/p>\n
Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams encouraged people to help improve these figures.<\/p>\n
“Victoria is leading the country when it comes to improving gender equality. We want people of all genders to enjoy equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities and outcomes \u2013 and programs like this help us make it happen.”<\/p>\n
The state government also gave social impact marketing firm Ellis Jones a $50,000 grant to encourage and support more women to stand for election.<\/p>\n
August also marks the centenary of Mary Rogers, Victoria’s first female councillor, being voted into office.<\/p>\n
Ms Rogers was elected to the Richmond City Council. She led progress in the areas of welfare, education and family issues, and initiating the first community maternal and child health services in Victoria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
