{"id":34305,"date":"2020-08-27T00:55:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T14:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=34305"},"modified":"2020-08-26T22:08:35","modified_gmt":"2020-08-26T12:08:35","slug":"my-big-catch-funding-boost-for-local-fishing-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/my-big-catch-funding-boost-for-local-fishing-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"My Big Catch: Funding boost for local fishing projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FISHERS in communities around the state will benefit from a dozen different recreational fishing projects thanks to a round of grants worth more than $1 million.<br \/>\nMinister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne said the grants will fund fish habitat projects and important infrastructure work to make fishing safer and more accessible.<br \/>\nThe Gippsland Lakes will receive a major boost, with the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority granted $110,000 to place woody habitat into lakes, which will provide more shelter and feeding sites for black bream, estuary perch and Australian bass.<br \/>\nThe Australian Trout Foundation will receive $110,000 to deliver another year of the Victorian Trout Fisheries Management Program, which includes vital monitoring of river populations in the North East and Gippsland.<br \/>\nA further $163,000 will be used to monitor fishers\u2019 catches in Port Phillip, Western Port, Corner Inlet and the Gippsland Lakes.<br \/>\nReport cards for 10 key native fisheries will continue for two more years thanks to a $120,000 grant.<br \/>\nThis information is keenly digested by hundreds of people every year at the Murray Codference.<br \/>\nOther grants awarded include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$39,000 for the North East Catchment Management Authority to install fish habitat at Katie Peters Reserve, near Eskdale<\/li>\n<li>$23,000 to help OzFish Unlimited build shellfish reefs in the Tambo Bay area of the Gippsland Lakes<\/li>\n<li>$22,000 for solar lighting along the St Helens rock wall in Geelong<\/li>\n<li>$25,000 for the Hindmarsh Shire Council to create pedestrian and vehicle access to a new lake in Rainbow<\/li>\n<li>$15,000 to realign and secure instream logs through Rochester to enable safe and open passage for fishers in boats<\/li>\n<li>$60,000 for Fishcare school visits and fishing workshops<\/li>\n<li>$24,000 for the North Central Catchment Management Authority to build more native fish habitat in Box-Pyramid Creek.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThese projects will boost fish habitat and infrastructure and encourage more people to get out on the water when it\u2019s safe to do so,&#8221; Fishing and Boating MP Melissa Horne said.<br \/>\n\u201cThis investment will provide a significant boost for local communities to build infrastructure and create programs which make fishing safer and more enjoyable.\u201d<br \/>\nThe funding will also go towards the Victorian Fisheries Authority\u2019s 2021 Recreational Fishing Guide, as well as fish length rulers and measures for rock lobsters and spiny crayfish.<br \/>\nThe grants are funded by recreational fishing licence fees, and more information on recipients and their projects can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/vfa.vic.gov.au\/feesatwork2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">vfa.vic.gov.au\/feesatwork2020<\/a>.<br \/>\nI would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone please keep those photos coming in of your own big catch!<br \/>\nPhotos: Please forward them to the email address below, with type of fish, weight, length, location, and your name. Email photos to <strong>mybigcatch@bigpond.com<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fishing Reports<\/strong><br \/>\nWeather conditions continue making it hard for all anglers<br \/>\nThe reports below are based on past reports and a few current ones but fishing has really been bad across the board.<\/p>\n<p>Anglesea<br \/>\nWhiting catches have been non-existent at the moment<br \/>\nThe odd pinkie may still be caught but catches are few<br \/>\nThe occasional Gummy Shark may still be around<br \/>\nFlathead are around but few in numbers<br \/>\nStill reports of some salmon off local beaches.<br \/>\n<em>Thanks to the Rusty Anglers Angling Club Anglesea<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Barwon Heads<br \/>\nReports of some snapper on recent catches<br \/>\nA few flathead had been reported offshore<br \/>\nWhiting were being reported offshore at last reports<br \/>\nSalmon are still being reported off local beaches<br \/>\nRiver was seeing the occasional whiting and trevally being caught.<br \/>\n<em>Reports compliments of the Ocean Grove Angling Club<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lorne<br \/>\nThe winter flathead are still on the go with most anglers catching their bag limit<br \/>\nSnapper are patchy with very few being caught<br \/>\nGummy Sharks are biting pretty well with a few big ones about<br \/>\nKing George Whiting are scarce but, still a few coming in<br \/>\nNannygai, Swallowtail and Teraki are still being landed<br \/>\nThe Pier has been a bit slow which is normal for this time of year but still producing the odd, whiting, salmon, calamari and snapper.<br \/>\n<em>Report thanks to the Lorne Aquatic and Angling Club<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Torquay<br \/>\nReports are few but whiting were being reported close inshore<br \/>\nAs where small pinkies and snapper<br \/>\nReports of flathead have been few and far between<br \/>\nThe odd report of Gummy Shark being caught offshore had been received previously<br \/>\nSalmon are still being reported off local beaches<br \/>\nSpring Creek had small bream catches being reported.<br \/>\n<em>Reports compliments of the Torquay Angling Club<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Queenscliff<br \/>\nSt Leonards is still seeing reports of King George whiting, flathead, squid, and the occasional snapper<br \/>\nClifton Springs snapper, whiting, calamari a few flathead, the odd gummy shark, have been reported<br \/>\nQueenscliff has seen reports of a few whiting, trevally, flathead being caught<br \/>\nThe Creek continues to produce the occasional trevally and salmon<br \/>\nSwan Bay sees reports of the odd calamari, whiting and flathead being caught<br \/>\nPoint Lonsdale salmon, trevally, whiting and snapper have all been reported<br \/>\nThe White Lady reports whiting, along with calamari, and snapper.<br \/>\nIndented heads report flathead, King George whiting, snapper and calamari are still being reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fishing Club Corner<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are an angling club and you wish to let people know what\u2019s going on within your club as well as help promote your club, just email <strong>mybigcatch@mybigcatch.com.au<\/strong> and we will post your club news here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FISHERS in communities around the state will benefit from a dozen different recreational fishing projects thanks to a round of grants worth more than $1 million.
