{"id":34313,"date":"2020-08-27T00:47:15","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T14:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=34313"},"modified":"2020-09-01T15:45:35","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T05:45:35","slug":"coker-and-plibersek-hear-concerns-about-changes-to-university-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/coker-and-plibersek-hear-concerns-about-changes-to-university-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Coker and Plibersek hear concerns about changes to university funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNIVERSITY students and those that are hoping to go from across the Geelong region have expressed their fears about the impact of the Coalition\u2019s proposed university reforms.<br \/>\nAnnounced in June, the Job-ready Graduates Package \u201cfocuses the public investment in higher education on national priorities and ensures the system delivers for students, industry and the community\u201d.<br \/>\nThe Coalition says the changes will better align federal funding of universities to \u201cemerging labour market priority areas\u201d, including nursing, health occupations, teaching and IT, and about 60 per cent of students (based on existing enrolments) will benefit from a reduction in student contributions or would see no change to student contributions.<br \/>\nFederal Labor say the changes will make it harder and more expensive for young people to go to university, with the cost of some degrees to increase by 113 per cent.<br \/>\nCorangamite Labor federal member Libby Coker and Shadow Minister for Education and Training Tanya Plibersek hosted an online Q&amp;A event on Thursday last week to discuss the issue.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.surfcoastsecondarycollege.vic.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Surf Coast Secondary College<\/a> student Lily Watterson, who hopes to study an arts degree in 2021, was one of the virtual attendees.<br \/>\nMs Watterson, who lives in Lorne, said the proposed changes were \u201ccrazy\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cI can\u2019t decide between psychology and law so I figure (an arts degree) will give me the space to understand what I like studying and what I don\u2019t.<br \/>\n\u201cHowever, I live regionally, so I definitely can\u2019t commute to uni every day and having this added pressure of the fees more than doubling is just crazy.<br \/>\n\u201cThere\u2019s no way I can afford to move to Melbourne and support myself. I\u2019ve got a single parent so it\u2019s not like I\u2019m going to be getting my rent paid every week.<br \/>\n\u201cI just think this is crazy, it\u2019s a crazy time for the government to do this. And I know I\u2019m not alone, I\u2019m not in a unique situation; this is quite common among my peers.<br \/>\n\u201cEven if I wanted to do a degree that was supported by the government financially, I\u2019ve already picked my subjects and haven\u2019t done the prerequisites to actually be eligible.\u201d<br \/>\nMs Plibersek sympathised with Ms Watterson\u2019s situation and encouraged her to write to her local Liberal and National MPs, as well as Education Minister Dan Tehan.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s such a common story, and I\u2019m so sorry for you,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not fair to expect someone at your late stage of education to throw away all your plans because you can\u2019t afford them anymore.\u201d<br \/>\nConsultation on the exposure draft legislation closed on August 17.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNIVERSITY students and those that are hoping to go from across the Geelong region have expressed their fears about the impact of the Coalition\u2019s proposed university reforms.
