	{"id":35662,"date":"2020-10-15T00:19:40","date_gmt":"2020-10-14T14:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=35662"},"modified":"2020-10-15T00:19:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T14:19:40","slug":"survey-reveals-australians-reactions-to-covid-symptoms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/survey-reveals-australians-reactions-to-covid-symptoms\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey reveals Australians\u2019 reactions to COVID symptoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>More than a third of Australians with cold- or flu-like symptoms spent time in public and almost one in five attended work in person despite rampant coronavirus 19 cases and deaths, according to a new survey.<\/h3>\n<p>The results from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behaviourworksaustralia.org\/scrub-covid-19-survey-wave-7-how-the-health-and-compliance-of-australians-is-changing-over-time\/\">Survey of COVID-19 Responses to Understand Behaviour<\/a> (SCRUB) project, released last week, examined symptomatic Australians\u2019 behaviours, how our mental health was tracking and what was concerning the population overall.<br \/>\nBehaviourWorks Australia, part of Monash University&#8217;s Sustainable Development Institute, is leading the Australian chapter of SCRUB in partnership with the state government.<br \/>\nThese results, collected between late August and early September, form the eighth round of data collection and provide policymakers with actionable insights into public attitudes and behaviours relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.<br \/>\nThe survey found only 27 per cent of people with symptoms reported getting tested for COVID-19, up from 15 per cent in the previous round.<br \/>\nA fifth of those with symptoms said they didn\u2019t get tested because they didn\u2019t think they had COVID-19.<br \/>\nHowever, of those that were symptomatic, almost 20 per cent attended work and more than a third spent time in public, only a third wore a face mask and only a quarter avoided close contact with those they live with.<br \/>\nOf the participants who did get tested, 13 per cent did not stay home, with 15 per cent of that group stating they didn&#8217;t know they needed to.<br \/>\nIn better news, SCRUB found the majority of Australians (81 per cent) report they always follow COVID-19 rules and regulations, while compliance with levels of protective behaviours &#8211; such as hand washing, wearing face masks and keeping physical distance from people outside of home &#8211; stayed the same or increased on the previous survey.<br \/>\nAustralians revealed their biggest concern was an economic recession, followed by society becoming more selfish and small companies failing.<br \/>\nHowever, an analysis of previous rounds of SCRUB showed people were starting to worry less about economic, health and social issues.<br \/>\nParticipants did state their mental health had taken a dip, with 30 per cent stating they have much or somewhat worse mental health than before the pandemic.<br \/>\nLead researcher Dr Peter Slattery said this round of SCRUB results was conflicting.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s great to see Australians aren\u2019t becoming complacent and are maintaining personal protective behaviours at a high rate.<br \/>\n\u201cOutbreaks last month in New Zealand and New South Wales, as well as the continued high case numbers in Melbourne saw most people across Australia do the right thing.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is also positive to see that Australians are worrying less about issues compared to the last round of SCRUB, indicating that we feel, as a nation, that we are on the road to recovery.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat is concerning, however, is that we are still seeing people who have cold- and flu-like symptoms either fail to get tested, or spend time in the community whilst symptomatic.<br \/>\n\u201cWe cannot have symptomatic people acting as though they don\u2019t have the virus when they simply can\u2019t be sure.
