WITH business returning to central Geelong the City is exploring ways to expand free parking in 2021.<\/p>\n
Following a notice of motion from Cr Eddy Kontelj at the latest council meeting, the City will begin to examine the possibility of introducing free two hours parking spaces over a 12-month period.<\/p>\n
“As we navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, it’s important we ensure the Geelong CBD has a healthy heart and both the community and business sector are supported,” he said.<\/p>\n
Cr Kontelj believes this initiative will encourage people to visit the CBD facilitating more trade in the area.<\/p>\n
“Gaining information will be useful for council as it considers how it can continue to help the region’s recovery and for making future decisions related to ‘clever and creative’ parking solutions for our community,” he said.<\/p>\n
The initiative comes as council considers the regions road to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
“Council is doing its due diligence by exploring options that have the potential to support the community and businesses,” Mayor Stephanie Asher said.<\/p>\n
The City have previously engaged in a $16.9 million initiative to support the community through COVID-19 which included free casual on and off-street parking in Central Geelong.<\/p>\n
Free parking in the CBD is set to finish on 31 December 2020 but will remain free across the weekend.<\/p>\n
As paid parking returns in the new year the City will offer some immediate relief by resuming its 30-minutes free parking trial in 2P spaces until 30 June 2021.<\/p>\n
Cr Kontelj’s notice of motion will be considered by the CEO with a report provided to the council in February 2021.<\/p>\n
“I look forward to receiving the CEO’s report and understanding the potential pros and cons of introducing free two hour on-street parking for 12-months in Central Geelong,” Cr Asher said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
