A CONFIRMED break in a sewer pipe has left a three-metre-deep sinkhole along Myers Street causing State Emergency Services to attend the scene.<\/p>\n
Repairs have been scheduled for Tuesday 5, 2021 after motorists were encouraged to avoid the area.<\/p>\n
The sinkhole was reported yesterday morning after a vehicle travelling along the area struck the hazard.<\/p>\n
Geelong Police attended the scene at about 10:30am and quickly gained control of the situation which was obstructing traffic well into the night.<\/p>\n
The matter was soon referred to Barwon Water who suspected a minor pipe failure upon first inspection.<\/p>\n
Further investigations have confirmed a break in the sewer pipe and manhole at the Myers Street location.<\/p>\n
Barwon Water crews carried out further inspections on the pipe last night and were able to confirm that the remainder was in good condition.<\/p>\n
Acting director Shaun Cumming said the sinkhole \u201ccaused minor damage to the road on Myers Street, adjacent to the Haymarket Carpark\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no disruption to sewerage services for our customers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Traffic continued to be diverted into the night as cars were encouraged to avoid a section of the road located near the Moorabool Street intersection.<\/p>\n
The SES Geelong Unit were called to the scene yesterday morning with a spokesperson crediting the fast response made by police to gain control of the situation.<\/p>\n
“When we arrived Victoria Police had it under control, they diverted traffic and had already contacted Council and Barwon Water.”<\/p>\n
Barwon Water are currently working to quickly resolve the issue while restoring the road to allow the return of safe traffic flow in the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe apologise for the inconvenience and will provide further updates via social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
