	{"id":37116,"date":"2021-01-14T00:56:09","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T14:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=37116"},"modified":"2021-01-15T08:29:34","modified_gmt":"2021-01-14T22:29:34","slug":"geelong-hair-aid-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-hair-aid-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Hair to help: City grant keeps volunteers snipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEERS are being supported to keep their scissors snipping for those most in need through a City of Greater Geelong grant.<\/p>\n<p>The $5,198 from the city\u2019s Community Grants program will go to the Geelong branch of Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0Community Cuts, which trains and co-ordinates volunteer\u00a0hairdressers who give vulnerable community members\u00a0haircuts.<\/p>\n<p>Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0volunteers connect with outreach programs to provide\u00a0haircuts to people in need, including those who might be experiencing homelessness, unemployment, mental health issues and\/or family violence.<\/p>\n<p>Some clients are from an Indigenous or culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0Inc founder Selina Tomasich said the council grant would support the training of 12 dedicated volunteers in Greater Geelong and help equip four locations with\u00a0hairdressing tools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVolunteers will provide more than 40\u00a0haircuts at each site every six weeks, totalling more than 1,200 free cuts over 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program will make a huge difference to vulnerable residents within the region, who might be unable to access a\u00a0hair\u00a0salon due to financial difficulty, mental health or language barriers or family violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hairdresser and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hairaid.org.au\/\">Hair Aid<\/a> ambassador Helen Dunne trains\u00a0hairdressing students through her business Helen Dunne Education to cut\u00a0hair\u00a0for\u00a0Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0clients.<\/p>\n<p>Brownbill Ward councillors Eddy Kontelj, Sarah Mansfield and Peter Murrihy visited Ms Dunne\u2019s studio last week to learn more about the program.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Dunne said there had been an increase in the number of people needing the free service since she first started volunteering with\u00a0Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has further increased demand for free\u00a0haircuts for members of the community who are having a rough time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really rewarding to see their faces light up when they see their fresh cut for the first time, it really makes a difference to their sense of self.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0projects also send cut\u00a0hair\u00a0to Sustainable Salons, which uses the waste product to help soak up oil spills.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Kontelj said the everyday experience of obtaining a\u00a0haircut should not be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReceiving a fresh haircut, which is something everybody should be able to have, at a vulnerable time can offer a much-needed confidence boost, instil dignity and provide a social outlet, which is so important.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Mansfield said the COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting a haircut is something many of us take for granted, but there are community members who are struggling as a result of the pandemic who might not be able to afford this service.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cr Peter Murrihy said community members are directly connected with outreach programs while accessing\u00a0Hair\u00a0Aid\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil\u2019s proud to support\u00a0Hair\u00a0Aid\u00a0as it restores a sense of dignity in community members doing it tough, while facilitating a relationship with outreach groups who can make a positive difference in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grant was among 120 worth a collective $567,000 in value awarded by the council last month under the first round of its 2020-21 Community Grants program.<\/p>\n<p>Applications of up to $350,000 under the $3 million Community Infrastructure grants stream are being assessed and will be awarded in February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VOLUNTEERS are being supported to keep their scissors snipping for those most in need through a City of Greater Geelong grant.
