	{"id":37307,"date":"2021-01-28T00:40:23","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T14:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=37307"},"modified":"2021-01-27T10:25:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T00:25:16","slug":"a-heartfelt-creative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/a-heartfelt-creative\/","title":{"rendered":"A heartfelt creative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LAINE Hogarty believes her best work is always achieved when it comes from the heart.<\/p>\n<p>So it was serendipitous that the Ocean Grove artist was invited to be part of an art trail celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Laine was among the 100 creatives state-wide \u2013 including 11 from this region \u2013 who each painted an UooUoo, a mythical animal resembling a cross between a wombat and a dugong.<\/p>\n<p>The sculptures were unveiled by the RCH Foundation this week and are now on display across Melbourne and at Federal Mills in North Geelong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48524\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48524\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48524\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Laine4_32392-e1611704670725.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove artist Laine Hogarty. Photo: ROXIE BENNETT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Laine\u2019s brightly-hued creation, named Pixo&amp;Pixa, depicts the two sides of the human brain and is dedicated to the memory of Geelong teenager David Saunders whose courage and positivity inspired her work.<\/p>\n<p>David, the son of Laine\u2019s long-time friend Jodie and her husband Ian, sadly passed away just before Christmas last year after a two-year battle with an inoperable grade four Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumour.<\/p>\n<p>The Covenant College student was able to see the completed work last year in what was a humbling and unforgettable experience for Laine.<\/p>\n<p>In a touching video interview filmed by Laine that day and shared on her Instagram account, David describes the artwork as \u201camazing\u201d and explains how he would always \u201clook on the bright side\u201d to cope with his condition and many hospital visits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid has been an inspiration since his birth \u2013 he survived and thrived against three brain bleeds as a three-month prem baby and lived a fully normal life until his eye started to turn on a strange angle when he was 12 years old,\u201d Laine explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turned out to be an inoperable brain tumour. David demonstrated great courage and acceptance of his situation \u2013 he never gave up trying to recover and to do all he could to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The starting point for Laine\u2019s design was a digital drawing exploring pixel plasticity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPixels are very malleable now with the software that we have got to work with so you can almost push them around on the surface,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started to look at the plasticity of the pixels and all of a sudden in a flash I thought \u2018this is so much like neuroplasticity\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 271px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/IMG_6461_84629.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"271\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Proud mum Jodie Saunders and her son David.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a result, her UooUoo contemplates the brain\u2019s ability to create new neurone pathways to heal and regenerate the body. The work is created in two halves \u2013 a male side called Pixo and a female side named Pixa \u2013 in recognition of all the boys and girls treated by the RCH.<\/p>\n<p>Laine, an award-winning artist who completed a Masters of Fine Art (Art in Public Places) at RMIT, says her art explores how we experience spaces in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>A working artist since 1999, she has loved drawing since childhood and won art prizes in primary school judged by legendary Melbourne cartoonist, Jeff Hook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was my hero and I loved to find the hooks he hid in his cartoons for children to discover,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was reflecting on that and decided to paint 14 hearts on the UooUoo to honour 14-year-old David\u2019s brave heart \u2013 there are seven hidden on each side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UooUoo, which took 26 days to complete, is on display at Federal Mills until March 21.
