{"id":37330,"date":"2021-01-28T00:48:09","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T14:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=37330"},"modified":"2021-01-28T00:48:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T14:48:09","slug":"musicians-and-crowds-sound-off-about-concerts-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/musicians-and-crowds-sound-off-about-concerts-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Musicians and crowds sound off about concert\u2019s success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE musicians on stage and the watching crowd alike showed their appreciation for the return of outdoor live music at Saturday\u2019s Sounds Better Together concert at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mtduneedestate.com.au\/\">Mount Duneed Estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event, announced less than a week beforehand by Visit Victoria and the Mushroom Group, saw the usual maximum crowd of 20,000 capped at an all-seated 5,000 in a new COVIDSafe format.<\/p>\n<p>New measures included more widely spaced chairs, entirely separated food and drink outlets for each side of the venue, and increased cleaning throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd gave a warm reception to all four artists on the bill \u2013 Missy Higgins, Tones And I, Gordi and Didirri \u2013 who likewise all showed their gratitude for being able to perform live again after a long 2020.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48490\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48490\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Untitled-design-6-4-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Didirri opened the Sounds Better Together concert at Mount Duneed Estate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Warrnambool singer-songwriter Didirri opened proceedings with his band. \u201cIt\u2019s good to be back on a stage that\u2019s not a lockdown stage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gordi was next and was similarly receptive to the audience\u2019s enthusiasm \u2013 \u201cI love crowds that haven\u2019t been let out in a while; best kind,\u201d she said. Gordi switched between keys, looped beats and acoustic guitar, and brought on surprise guest Alex Lahey to duet on a song they wrote together while visiting the United States.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48482\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48482\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48482\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Untitled-design-4-5-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gordi belts out a high note.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tones And I injected a massive burst of energy to proceedings, dancing around the stage and getting the crowd out of their seats with a set that included covers she first performed as a busker and her more recent hits including &#8220;Dance Monkey&#8221;, &#8220;Never Seen The Rain&#8221; and &#8220;Fly Away&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48491\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48491\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48491\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Untitled-design-7-4-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tones And I leads by example and gets the crowd jumping.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Missy Higgins closed the night and was by far the most chatty, sharing anecdotes with the crowd between songs \u2013 including that she had to find an entirely new band in Melbourne for the gig and they only had a week to learn her songs \u2013 and expressing her thanks for the massive effort at short notice that made Sounds Better Together possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI literally found out about this gig about six days ago; it\u2019s amazing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so bloody good to be here with living, breathing human beings who are giving back \u2026 it\u2019s like we\u2019re in a relationship!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Higgins also brought back Gordi to share lead vocals on the title track from 2004 album <em>The Sound of White<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48486\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48486\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/Untitled-design-5-3-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Missy Higgins in full flight.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earlier in the day, A Day on the Green promoter Michael Newton revealed that performances from Saturday would be part of a TV special featuring all of the Sounds Better Together concerts being held across Victoria, to be broadcast on Channel 9 this Saturday, January 30 at 7.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE musicians on stage and the watching crowd alike showed their appreciation for the return of outdoor live music at Saturday\u2019s Sounds Better Together concert at Mount Duneed Estate.
