THE City of Greater Geelong has launched the program for Geelong’s Design Week ahead of next month’s creative festivities.<\/p>\n
The program will feature a diverse range of exhibitions, experiences, and workshops between March 18-28.<\/p>\n
Available for online viewing in 2021, Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher said the event will showcase the best of the region’s designers, artists and innovators.<\/p>\n
“The exhibitions, performances and experiences on offer are really exciting and I’m sure many of them will challenge current thinking and pique imaginations,” Cr Asher said.<\/p>\n
Much like the current times, the theme is ‘unpredictable’ and participants exploring how they can push the boundaries of creativity and design while addressing current global challenges.<\/p>\n
Following a cancellation last year as a result of the pandemic, 2021 will mark the third time this event has been held by the city.<\/p>\n
“We are thrilled to be delivering Geelong Design Week in full this year \u2013 our local creative community has so much to offer,” Cr Asher said.<\/p>\n
“I know this past year has been challenging for those in the arts sector, but it’s also been a year where many artists have had a chance to explore their creativity more than ever.<\/p>\n
“As a result, the program for Geelong Design Week 2021 is full to the brim with wild, inspiring and transformative concepts and creations.”<\/p>\n
Highlighted events include ‘RONE in Geelong’ which is a gallery installation by the locally-born artist exploring his own fascination with beauty and decay.<\/p>\n
The internationally recognised artist will share his early stencil works and photographs of major installations, as well as his prior public art commonly known for spearheading Melbourne’s street art movement.<\/p>\n
During the week, the city will also be diving into upcoming plans for a new public space to be created on Bayley Street, as well as promoting local artists through the open studio trail from Geelong to the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n
Chair of economic development portfolio, councillor Peter Murrihy, said bookings were essential for most events.<\/p>\n
“Book now for your chance to explore our past, present and future through exhibitions, performances, tours, workshops, storytelling, and immersive digital technologies,” Cr Murrihy said.<\/p>\n
“Events include unique behind-the-scenes experiences, as well as opportunities to participate in hands-on workshops with master artisans.”<\/p>\n
The program presented by the City of Greater Geelong aims to celebrate the region’s global status as Australia’s only UNESCO Creative City of design.<\/p>\n
“Geelong Design Week presents a unique opportunity to see Geelong’s wealth of creative talent on display, while also learning how clever design plays such a key role in our success as a community,” Mr Murrihy said.<\/p>\n
