{"id":38273,"date":"2021-04-01T00:59:40","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T13:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=38273"},"modified":"2021-03-31T16:05:55","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T05:05:55","slug":"geelong-leaders-city-wishlist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/geelong-leaders-city-wishlist\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong leaders discuss city\u2019s wishlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOUR of the Geelong region\u2019s most notable voices for advocacy have all expressed different yet related priorities that the city and the region should be pursuing into the future.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geelongchamber.com.au\/\">Geelong Chamber of Commerce<\/a> hosted the online \u201cBeing Loud for Geelong\u201d webinar on Thursday last week.<\/p>\n<p>The 40-minute discussion, moderated by the chamber\u2019s chief executive officer Ben Flynn, featured G21 Geelong Region Alliance chief executive officer Giulia Baggio, Touism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine executive director Brett Ince, Committee for Geelong chief executive officer Jennifer Cromarty and Geelong Manufacturing Council chief executive officer David Peart.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to express their three wishes for the city, the panellists (and Mr Flynn) each came up with three concepts, but there was a general sense of agreement with everyone\u2019s ideas.<\/p>\n<p>David Peart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Procurement &#8211; \u201cWe need to do a lot better, there\u2019s some really good and bad examples of local procurement.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Equity &#8211; \u201cIf there\u2019s economic growth, we need to bring the areas of Geelong that are struggling with us.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Community improvement &#8211; \u201cIf we\u2019re going to improve our community as a whole, we need to look after each other a lot better.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Giulia Baggio:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting the region back on its feet very quickly in the next 12 months &#8211; \u201cLet\u2019s get that tourist traffic back, let\u2019s get the international students back.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Growing well &#8211; \u201cLe\u2019s plan over the next 10 years how we do that sustainably and equitably.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cLet\u2019s make this the most livable region in Australia.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jennifer Cromarty:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Significant infrastructure needs &#8211; \u201cWe really need to get cracking with the rail duplication and the connections between South Geelong and Geelong. This is all stuff the Department of Transport are working on but it takes a really long time; we just need to land it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A city that reflects and respects the culture and history of the Wadawurrung &#8211; \u201cWe\u2019ve talked about this at multiple forums, we\u2019ve just got to do better.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The City Deal \u2013 \u201cI really want to see the three levels of government land a way to work together that is sustainable and long term.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brett Ince:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre within the next few years &#8211; \u201cThat is an absolute wish for me because it does drive business visitation but also knowledge exchange.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Having the visitor lens put on the Geelong CBD &#8211; \u201cWe can align that with more hotel development, the opportunity to grow that overnight stay and spend, and ultimately that leads to more jobs for our community.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTo see Geelong and Bellarine as a world-class inclusive destination that inspires visitors to create memories and depart with the desire to return.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ben Flynn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infrastructure keeping up with population growth &#8211; \u201cWe want people to come here, but let\u2019s make sure it remains livable.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Brand Geelong &#8211; \u201cI\u2019d love to have a banner under which we all work together that we can all support that makes us more proud to be in the city that we\u2019re in.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>More new business initiatives &#8211; \u201cI want Geelong to be open for business, which also includes a discussion around our commercial rates as well.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOUR of the Geelong region\u2019s most notable voices for advocacy have all expressed different yet related priorities that the city and the region should be pursuing into the future.
