	{"id":38403,"date":"2021-04-08T00:05:37","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T13:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=38403"},"modified":"2021-04-08T10:09:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T23:09:00","slug":"vicses-crash-rescue-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/vicses-crash-rescue-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"VICSES members refresh their crash rescue skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEMBERS of the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) have taken part in hands-on training to keep their vital road crash rescue (RCR) skills up to date.<\/p>\n<p>The VICSES South West Region office in Bell Park hosted the refresher workshop last week, which was attended by 25 VICSES members.<\/p>\n<p>VICSES manager of operational improvement Jackson Bell said the idea was to ensure consistency in training between the state\u2019s many VICSES units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theory is you could be in Dartmoor &#8211; which is as far south-west as we go &#8211; or all the way to Mallacoota or as far up as Mildura, but you\u2019re receiving the same message,\u201d Mr Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo irrespective of where they\u2019re located, everyone\u2019s trained to the same standard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of new car technology as well as later model European vehicles that offer differences in techniques, as well as the exploration and trialing of battery-operated tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-38407 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-36-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-36-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-36-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-36-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-36.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said people may be familiar with the \u201cjaws of life\u201d being used at a car accident, but that was not the best or only tool used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ses.vic.gov.au\/\">VICSES<\/a> in such a situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s different ways to do the same outcome,\u201d Mr Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of tools that we can use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about trying to promote the use of rams, and trying to return the vehicle to its initial state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a multitude of ways in which we can extricate someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VICSES responds to between 1,300-1,400 RCRs each year and provides the largest road rescue network in Australia, with 103 accredited RCR provider units across Victoria and 22 rescue support units.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the highest service delivery ratios for RCR globally, and equates to nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of the VICSES service base across its statewide footprint.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bell said VICSES was working with Deakin University to develop a VR training package, which would include training on RCRs involving electric vehicles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEMBERS of the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) have taken part in hands-on training to keep their vital road crash rescue (RCR) skills up to date.
