{"id":38446,"date":"2021-04-08T00:05:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T13:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/lisa-neville-extends-leave-by-three-months\/"},"modified":"2021-04-08T00:05:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T13:05:38","slug":"lisa-neville-extends-leave-by-three-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/lisa-neville-extends-leave-by-three-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Lisa Neville extends leave by three months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELLARINE MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.vic.gov.au\/about\/people-in-parliament\/members-search\/list-all-members\/details\/22\/42\">Lisa Neville<\/a> will extend her leave from state Parliament as she continues to manage her recovery from the impacts of Crohn\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister for Water, Police and Emergency Services has lived with the auto-immune disease for 32 years, but the recent worsening of her condition led to her being admitted to hospital in early February.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, she expected to not need surgery and return to work in three months\u2019 time, but said in a statement on Saturday that her condition had worsened and \u201cmy doctors have indicated that the only effective treatment now is surgery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Neville said the significant operation would require up to 12 weeks of recovery so she would not return to her ministries until the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough it is disappointing and always concerning to have part of your bowel removed, for many who have Crohn\u2019s this can result in a period of remission and enable people to return after recovery to normal life and work,\u201d Ms Neville said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have every confidence in my medical team and the nursing support at the hospital that this surgery will give me the chance to achieve this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thanked her friends and colleagues for their ongoing support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would especially like to thank all those who suffer from Crohn\u2019s or similar illnesses who have reached out,\u201d Ms Neville said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very much a hidden illness and unless you have experienced it first-hand it is hard to understand the toll it can take, both physically and mentally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a small consolation that people are now learning more about Crohn\u2019s, it\u2019s triggers and the seriousness that the complications can cause.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BELLARINE MP Lisa Neville will extend her leave from state Parliament as she continues to manage her recovery from the impacts of Crohn\u2019s disease.
