{"id":38681,"date":"2021-04-29T00:42:46","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T13:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=38681"},"modified":"2021-05-19T12:41:16","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T01:41:16","slug":"local-athletes-win-medals-at-the-aussies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/local-athletes-win-medals-at-the-aussies\/","title":{"rendered":"Local athletes win medals at The Aussies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIFE SAVING athletes from the Geelong region were among the best of the best at The Aussies this year.<\/p>\n<p>Formally known as the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, the annual event is the biggest date on the Australian surf life saving surf sports calendar.<\/p>\n<p>This year, The Aussies attracted more than 6,000 competitors from 315 surf clubs to the Sunshine Coast to compete in 480 beach and ocean events from April 16-24.<\/p>\n<p>Fairhaven SLSC\u2019s 220 Years women\u2019s Surf Boat Team \u201cHot Catch\u201d won the gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Costa, Mardi Spittle, Tracey Holding, Samantha Trask and sweep David Thompson took out the hotly contested race in small surf conditions, edging out West Beach SLSC\u2019s \u201cSpritzers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team is so happy with the result and to win the Australian title,\u201d Ms Costa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve worked so hard as a team in preparation for The Aussies and to have it all pay off and get up on the podium for Fairhaven is fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51525\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51525\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-14-3-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hard work paid off for the \u201cLorne Chops\u201d surf boat crew from Lorne SLSC when they won gold.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lorne SLSC\u2019s Open Men\u2019s Short Course surf boats team \u201cLorne Chops\u201d also won gold.<\/p>\n<p>Geoffrey Matthews, Andrew Downie, Edward White, Jordan Hooper and Jack Ryan won convincingly ahead of Elouero Wilko (NSW), Mermaid Beach Kennards (QLD) and Batemans Bay (NSW) in small but sunny conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews said the triumph was long awaited following lockdowns which came right when the team was reaching its peak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLorne Chops have been together for two years now and we were only just hitting our straps when we won ASRL gold last year &#8211; which ended up being only weeks before that season was cut short by a lockdown in Victoria,\u201d Matthews said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some ways winning this medal at Aussies feels like a bit of redemption and justification for all the hard work we\u2019ve put in under exceptional circumstances this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51526\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51526\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51526\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-15-3-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay SLSC\u2019s Masters men\u2019s double ski team Tim Altman and Glenn Singleton won the silver medal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Torquay SLSC\u2019s Tim Altman and Glenn Singleton took out the silver medal in the masters men\u2019s 45-49 years double ski race.<\/p>\n<p>Altman and Singleton also finished fifth in the 130 Years Ski Relay with Torquay teammate Heath Richards. \u201cWe\u2019re so stoked to take the silver and be ranked second in Australia in the double ski race at The Aussies,\u201d Altman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been an awesome season back racing after the COVID-19 break and it\u2019s always a pleasure teaming up to race with Glenn and putting on the blue and yellow for our club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe old boys love to show the rest of our team how it\u2019s done!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51527\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51527\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/Untitled-design-16-2-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocean Grove SLSC\u2019s Amenah McDonald with her silver and bronze medals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ocean Grove SLSC\u2019s Amenah McDonald has had two podium finishes, taking silver in the Masters 45-49 Years Ironwoman and bronze in the Masters Women\u2019s 45-49 Years Single Ski Race.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald backed up her efforts with a fifth in the 45-49 Years Board Race and teamed up with fellow Ocean Grove athlete Bethan Knapp to take fifth place in the 40-44 Years Women\u2019s Board Rescue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to The Aussies with no expectations and am so proud to have come away with two Australian medals,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother highlight was winning my board semi-final before grabbing a fifth in the final and coming fifth in the board rescue with my teammate Bethan Knapp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so great to have a great team of girls, including Bethan and Melissa Fitzgerald to race at The Aussies with.
