<\/p>\nMULTI-million-dollar upgrades have been unveiled at the Geelong West Oval over the weekend following major renovations.<\/p>\n
Home to the Geelong West Giants, Geelong West Cricket Club and Geelong Cycling Club, the $11 million pavilion and precinct upgrades were jointly funded by the state government and City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
Described as a \u201cworld-class sporting facility\u201d, the completed project has been earmarked as an alternative venue to Kardinia Park in order to bring more major competitions to the western suburbs.<\/p>\n

The new two-storey multi-purpose facility features home and away female-friendly and umpire change rooms, as well as accessible shower and toilet facilities as required by the AFL Regional Facility Guidelines.<\/p>\n
The Pavilion also houses a commercial kitchen, kiosk, social rooms, club gym, and timekeeper and coaches\u2019 boxes.<\/p>\n
Upgrades to the precinct were also included in the major redevelopment which included a new scoreboard, minor modifications to the heritage listed Flower Family stand, enhanced seating, landscaping and additional car parking.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher attended the opening event on May 8 alongside Lara MP John Eren and Geelong MP Christine Couzens.<\/p>\n
\u201cWest Oval has incredible history and it\u2019s a very important place for the local community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The City of Greater Geelong contributed $3.6 million to the major redevelopment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new pavilion gives the tenant clubs an amazing home facility that will help them grow participation, and also positions the venue as a regional facility capable of hosting local football finals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Sport portfolio chair, councillor Ron Nelson, said the upgraded facilities will play a significant role in increasing female participation.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot only are these facilities more accessible and appealing for everyone to enjoy, they are also of a high calibre, suitable for elite level sporting competition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
