{"id":38970,"date":"2021-05-20T08:00:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T21:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=38970"},"modified":"2021-05-20T11:19:30","modified_gmt":"2021-05-20T00:19:30","slug":"tahnee-does-a-bucketload-of-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/tahnee-does-a-bucketload-of-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Tahnee does a bucketload of good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAHNEE Parsons is passionate about giving back to her community and making a difference as a volunteer with the Salvos.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old from Clifton Springs answered a call to raise money for the Red Shield Appeal in 2018 and her commitment to the making a difference has only grown since then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always had that passion in me to help people but I didn\u2019t really know how,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not enjoying uni and I came across this Facebook post randomly and I thought \u2018the Salvos, maybe I should try volunteering with them\u2019 and it just sort of snowballed from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tahnee believes she has found her purpose at the Bellarine Salvos and now helps where she\u2019s needed, including as a youth mentor and as part of the weekly Outreach Van team.<\/p>\n<p>She is on the Bellarine Red Shield Appeal committee and last year single-handedly raised $2000 for the annual Red Shield Appeal by sharing updates and heartfelt messages via her social media.<\/p>\n<p>Tahnee has already raised $380 this year but says her focus is on encouraging others to play their part in this year\u2019s Red Shield Appeal Digital Doorknock.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52351\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52351\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/IMG_7022_20689.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tahnee Parsons is encouraging everyone to get behind this year&#8217;s Red Shield Appeal. Photo: MICHAEL CHAMBERS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 the Salvos are encouraging the community to become \u201cdigital door knockers\u201d by creating an online fundraising page to raise money for their local Salvos.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to raise $32 million to help those experiencing hardship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the important things to mention is that the donations stay local,\u201d Tahnee says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good for people donating to feel reassured that their donations are going towards important programs like the Outreach Van, our counselling program and our Youth Ambassador program.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52370\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52370 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-16-at-11.41.13-am-300x123.png?_t=1621129358\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australians are being urged to &#8220;do a bucketload of good&#8221; by raising money online or donating.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tahnee says mentors such as captains Peter and Di Hobbs at Bellarine Peninsula Salvos have given her the confidence to deal with confronting situations brought on by homelessness, family and domestic violence, alcohol or other drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m so grateful I have mentors and role models who are holding me like a safety net so I can\u2019t fall and I know I can step up and succeed,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Each Friday night between 7.30pm and midnight Tahnee is on board the outreach van is as it travels around the region, from the Bellarine to Norlane, helping those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat when we go out and we connect with the most vulnerable people in the community, the homeless, family violence situations and people in their homes who are isolated,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52355\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-52355\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Outreachvan_62797.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Each Friday night between 7.30pm and midnight, Tahnee (right) is one of the dedicated Salvos on board the Outreach Van.
