THE City of Greater Geelong has given residents the all clear to walk their dogs off-leash at the Highton pipe track following last week’s council meeting.<\/p>\n
A notice of motion led by councillor Ron Nelson resulted in the relaxed results for local dog walkers who are the largest recreational users of the greenspace.<\/p>\n
Cr Nelson who represents the Kardinina Ward said the review was a good example of community members successfully creating change.<\/p>\n
“Thanks to the community members who contacted me about the Highton pipe track,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Residents are free to let their dogs off the lead in this area while being mindful of other users exercising along the track.”<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the green corridor dividing Highton and Wandana Heights was a popular spot to exercise amongst residents.<\/p>\n
“This is fantastic news for those who like to take their dog to the Highton pipe track,” she said.<\/p>\n
“If community members feel strongly about being able to walk dogs off lead, they are welcome to contact their local councillors about the topic.”<\/p>\n
Dog owners are being encouraged to maintain effective control over their pets when accessing the track and to pick up after them.<\/p>\n
The news follows as the construction nears completion on a fenced dog park in the Kardinia Ward to be located on Barrabool Road in Belmont, beneath Settlement Road Bridge.<\/p>\n
The fenced dog park will be one of three set to be completed by the city during this upcoming financial year, with more facilities earmarked for Drysdale and Lara.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
