ROVING performers will bring the streets to life at an additional six dining precincts across the municipality.<\/p>\n
In support of the city\u2019s \u201cIt\u2019s Or Backyard campaign\u201d, live entertainment will attract business to new areas following the ongoing hardships faced by local businesses during the pandemic.<\/p>\n
The It\u2019s Our Backyard campaign encourages Geelong residents to think local in order to support the community in its recovery.<\/p>\n
Backed by state government, the free entrainment program will run across Pakington Street, High Street in Belmont, Belle Vue Avenue, The Centreway, Eastern Beach Road and The Terrace in Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n
Mayor Stephanie Asher said the initiative is designed to attract and retain visitors to the commercial precincts.
\n\u201cThe roving performers will add further personality and life to the busy precincts,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope they will create a more enjoyable experience for visitors and provide another reason for people to spend more time sampling the local dining and shopping options.\u201d<\/p>\n
The live entertainment program is an additional element of the city\u2019s outdoor dining initiative that began in September 2020 as a way to attract more customers to local restaurants following changing COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n
Funded by the Victorian Government\u2019s Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package, the city approved more than 80 temporary permits for new or extended outdoor al fresco areas and streetscape.<\/p>\n
The outdoor dining program remains in place at Pakington, Union and Yarra streets until June 22.<\/p>\n
Part of the live entertainment program, community members can enjoy music and arts ranging from musicians, gypsy jazz, street theatre and poetry at the various locations.<\/p>\n
Chair of the Arts, Hospitality and Live Entertainment portfolio, Cr Eddy Kontelj, said the initiative will further support the arts community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has drastically limited the chances to perform live, share talent and spread joy over the last 14 months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis program will connect our artists to new audiences and encourage residents to enjoy the lively fun with their community.\u201d<\/p>\n
A range of performers can be found at the various locations each night until June 30.<\/p>\n
