Photo: CORMAC HANRAHAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They started by selling eggs and then stepped up to chicken sales when the business was passed onto them by Jan Juc boys Max and Charlie Dent, who had moved away to study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe jumped at the opportunity to make some pocket money,\u201d recalls Wilbur, who is completing Year 12 at Geelong College and saving for an around Australia adventure he hopes to take next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had been selling eggs for a long time from chooks we had bought from Max and Charlie, so it seemed like a good idea and it was great to keep the local business going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maisy says chickens make amazing pets with the added bonus of giving you delicious fresh eggs every day.<\/p>\n<p>She says they lay at around 20 weeks of age and can give you eggs for quite a few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are the perfect animal for young children to take care of as they don\u2019t mind being handled, and it is always exciting to check the nest to find a fresh egg or two,\u201d the Year 10 Kardinia International College student says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56749\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56749\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Bellbrae_Chickens__59810-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: CORMAC HANRAHAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey are super friendly, as well as being an economical and sustainable way to get rid of your food waste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChickens are so easy to look after, and we make sure we give people all the information they need to keep their girls happy and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bellbrae Chickens sells Isa browns, Australorps and leghorns pullets (young hens).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our breeds are awesome egg layers with the Isa browns bringing a little more cuddly and friendly,\u201d Maisy says.<\/p>\n<p>Wilbur says most people buy three to six hens and the Isa brown and Australorps chickens were the most popular.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56751\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56751\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Bellbrae_Chickens__89934-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wilbur says each of the chickens has their own unique personality. Photo: CORMAC HANRAHAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChickens are really great and I love how all of them have their own personality,\u201d Wilbur says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really realise that when you own them yourself. Some are timid, some are more outgoing \u2013 it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have about 20 of our own chickens but at any one time we\u2019ll have about 600 chickens going through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll buy 100 or 200 every fortnight or every four weeks and they filter through as we sell them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All you need to get started is a fox-proof chicken coop, a run outside the chicken coop and then food and water to keep them nourished and content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fox-proof chicken coop is one of the most important things.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56748\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56748\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/Bellbrae_Chickens__52525-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: CORMAC HANRAHAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEven in the local township, you can expect to find a fox if you have chickens, so make sure they are safe and sound in their coop in the evenings,\u201d Wilbur warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know from experience that foxes will kill every one of your chickens if they can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilbur and Maisy say they have picked up some handy skills through running the business that will help them in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a really good learning experience running our own business, taking orders, talking to customers, and the day-to-day looking after the baby chickens,\u201d Wilbur says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore going into it I had no idea about profit and loss and what goes into all the marketing side of it, so it\u2019s really useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The siblings equally share the workload which they say is \u201cpretty cruisey\u201d, taking about 15 minutes a day and then a big day of selling every two to three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56756\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56756\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/08\/213450139_997051351051636_1250657753411568159_n-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-56756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: CORMAC HANRAHAN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Maisy says the delivery day runs like a well-oiled machine, with the hens boxed and ready to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur neighbour\u2019s kids love helping on chicken pick-up day, catching chickens and popping them into boxes.
