{"id":42053,"date":"2021-10-16T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T17:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=42053"},"modified":"2021-10-13T11:18:39","modified_gmt":"2021-10-13T00:18:39","slug":"regions-fine-wine-recognised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/regions-fine-wine-recognised\/","title":{"rendered":"Region&#8217;s fine wine recognised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINE Geelong\u2019s Steven Paul admits he had to pinch himself as he sat watching five judges taste the best wines of the region before they deliberated on this year\u2019s Geelong Wine Show winners.<\/p>\n<p>Like almost every industry, the pandemic had thrown twists and turns at our local winemakers, including the cancellation of the 2020 Geelong Wine Show and a change in market trends.<\/p>\n<p>But this year \u2013 with dates scheduled at the start of 2021 and just over a week since Geelong and the Surf Coast ended a surprised seven-day lockdown \u2013 the judging has taken place, albeit without the usual public tasting on the day, and the medal winners have been decided.<\/p>\n<p>Steven, the Wine Show committee\u2019s chair and Oakdene general manager-wine director, said this year\u2019s show was particularly important for the local industry and to see it come together to recognise winegrowers was quite an achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been very hard to continually forge ahead and stay positive; there was no show last year so it\u2019s been good to get together a COVIDSafe show,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the judges are from regional Victoria and out of lockdown areas; we\u2019ve hosted the judges and the Wine Show committee in a bubble and been able to go ahead with the judging and pushed back the public tasting,\u201d he added, paying tribute to the judges who travelled from across the state and volunteered at multiple wine shows, usually spread out over 12 months but this year, squeezed into just two months.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42065\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-42065\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/10\/wine-show-judges-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Wine Show judges John Harris, Liam Tromp, Victor Nash, Susannah Lavery and Jen Pfeiffer have critiqued more than 185 locally produced wines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In another sign of the times, the official management of the wine show has gone virtual through the Australian Wine Research Institute\u2019s Showrunner platform which accepts entries and, together with iPad-equipped judges, manages the judging on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-six local producers have entered more than 186 wines, with new classes and three new trophies added to the show this year for the best sparkling, \u2018other white\u2019 and \u2018other red\u2019, recognising the increasing variety of wines being produced across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new trophies are rewarding diversity;
