	{"id":42649,"date":"2021-11-15T04:00:31","date_gmt":"2021-11-14T17:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=42649"},"modified":"2021-11-10T11:46:33","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T00:46:33","slug":"bell-park-north-goes-pink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/bell-park-north-goes-pink\/","title":{"rendered":"Bell Park North goes pink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TEACHERS and students at Bell Park North Primary School proudly turned a bright shade of pink on Friday to draw attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>The Bell Park North Primary cohort created a field of \u201cpink ladies\u201d to raise awareness after postponing their original date for the event a week prior due to a positive COVID-19 case.<\/p>\n<p>The original date of October 29 coincided with the six-year anniversary for the diagnosis of one of the school\u2019s teachers, Kristen Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Organiser and foundation teacher at Bell Park North, Caitlin Mahar, said because of her newly appointed \u201ccommunity\u201d role it seemed like a wonderful idea to bring the entire school community together to raise awareness for a worthy cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeth [Carey] and I were both given the role of \u2018community\u2019 this year, so we looked through the school\u2019s calendar and decided on a few days of the year that we felt were important for our school\u2019s community,\u201d Ms Mahar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis day made perfect sense given it is about something that has personally touched our community.\u201d<br \/>\nEducator Ms Thomas has finished her treatment and is now a cancer survivor, making last Friday\u2019s event even more special.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Thomas has been a teacher at Bell Park North for the past 11 years, teaching from year levels Grade One to Grade Six.<\/p>\n<p>She now holds the role of disability inclusion and welfare coordinator and remains a much-loved member of the staff.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s event brought back \u201cbittersweet\u201d memories for Ms Thomas but she is eternally grateful to the Bell Park North community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis place holds a very special place in my heart,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I would have gotten through my treatment if it wasn\u2019t for this school and the staff that are here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe love and support from almost everybody was just unbelievable and I don\u2019t know if I could ever repay them for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/StaffPink2_08645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"483\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Back left to right: Cancer survivor Kristen Thomas, assistant principal Chris Cox and principal Anthea Lagadinos.
