{"id":42917,"date":"2021-11-25T18:00:41","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T07:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=42917"},"modified":"2021-11-25T18:00:41","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T07:00:41","slug":"new-video-promotes-safe-cycling-on-the-surf-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/new-video-promotes-safe-cycling-on-the-surf-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"New video promotes safe cycling on the Surf Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW video has been released to encourage riders to play it safe on Surf Coast&#8217;s roads and trails.<\/p>\n<p>The short video showcasing some of the shire&#8217;s most scenic rides and experiences of local riders was produced with funding from a Department of Transport Community Road Safety Grant.<\/p>\n<p>It calls on local and visiting riders to take simple safety measures, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear bright clothing for visibility<\/li>\n<li>Wear a properly fitted helmet<\/li>\n<li>Obey road rules<\/li>\n<li>Stay alert and avoid distractions<\/li>\n<li>Slow down and be patient<\/li>\n<li>Always look both ways, and<\/li>\n<li>Have respect for one another on the road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the video, local cyclist Fiona Matthews calls on riders to take the simple steps that can save lives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61352\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-61352 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/In-Article-Picture-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fiona Mathews cycling along a Surf Coast road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether you&#8217;re in a car or on a bike or you&#8217;re a local or just passing through, we all just want to enjoy the journey and get home safe,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The population of the Surf Coast has grown. We&#8217;re a major tourist destination. Therefore the trails and the roads are getting busier, so we need to have more patience to share those spaces.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast Shire councillor and cycling enthusiast Mike Bodsworth thanked the Department of Transport for the grant to produce the video.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During COVID we&#8217;ve seen cycling stand out as a great exercise and transport option, and participation has boomed,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61353\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61353\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/In-Article-Picture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam Maffett cycling through Anglesea Heath.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From cruising around town streets and pathways to epic road riding and mountain biking, cycling has become a Surf Coast staple.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Riding is great fun and we want everyone to enjoy themselves and make it home to their families. Let&#8217;s all take care, share the roads and look out for each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is now law to give cyclists the space to ride safely. Drivers need to slow when passing riders and give at least one metre in speed zones up to 60km\/h, and at least one-and-a-half metres in zones over 60km\/h.<\/p>\n<p>The video will be promoted across social media and other online channels as well as via local event organisers and tourism operators.
