{"id":43547,"date":"2021-12-24T01:03:45","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T14:03:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=43547"},"modified":"2021-12-23T17:08:30","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T06:08:30","slug":"marleys-starlight-wish-granted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/marleys-starlight-wish-granted\/","title":{"rendered":"Marley&#8217;s Starlight Wish granted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GROVEDALE&#8217;S Marley Reddington has had his long-awaited Starlight Wish granted.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year-old has been diagnosed with multiple complications from extreme prematurity (24 weeks), including chronic lung disease, and asked the Starlight Foundation for a new cubby house where he could play safely outside.<\/p>\n<p>Having first asked for a Travel Wish where the Reddington family could drive to a holiday destination (as Marley needs oxygen support), COVID border restrictions resulted in Marley choosing a cubby house Wish instead, where he could host his family, friends and carers without the health risks of a park and enjoy his hobby of rock collecting.<\/p>\n<p>The unveiling of the cubbyhouse earlier this month was a complete surprise for Marley, as the Starlight worked on a sneaky install in the background while Marley was out at appointments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43549\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43549 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/CaptainStarlightand_72069_tn-591x380.jpg?_t=1640239577\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Captain Starlight and Captain Starlight with the new cubby in Marley&#8217;s backyard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the reveal, Marley was greeted with Captain Starlight, confetti and cupcakes as he walked down a red carpet.<\/p>\n<p>The cubby itself is something to behold, complete with well-stocked kitchen, seating area, Avengers pillows and a barista machine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Marley requiring oxygen, it makes it really hard to get to parks,&#8221; Marley&#8217;s mum Kellie and dad Steve said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His new cubby house has given him a little place of his own to take ownership of and experience playing outside safely just like his peers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t know what the future holds for Marley, so we need to make the most of every opportunity and enjoy these special times.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Starlight&#8217;s Wish program really makes a difference to the lives of sick kids like Marley who haven&#8217;t had the greatest start in life and perhaps don&#8217;t get to enjoy the same freedoms we experienced with our own upbringing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marly&#8217;s Wish was the first since the Starlight Foundation began its annual Christmas Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation is seeking to raise $1.7 million to grant more than 266 life-changing Starlight Wishes to sick children this Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Like Marley, some travel wishes have been postponed during the past 18 months and Starlight has seen an increase in requests for &#8220;wishes at home&#8221;, including bedroom makeovers, gaming consoles and playrooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43550\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43550 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/MarleyReddington_67814_tn-595x380.jpg?_t=1640239618\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marley Reddington inside his new cubby. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Starlight has also delivered more puppy companions than ever before<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The last two years have given us all personal experience of uncertainty, social isolation and a life disrupted,&#8221; Starlight Foundation chief executive officer Louise Baxter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For children and families facing serious illness, they face these challenges every day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During this special time of year, there are no less sick kids.
