The event will be one of spectacle and reflection according to Newcomb & District president Damian Lynch, headlined by specially designed kits credited to Wadawurrung traditional owner and Yorta-Yorta woman Billy \u201cBJ\u201d O\u2019Toole and Ruby Evans, which will only be worn by players once only on game day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe stories within the uniforms are vital to be known and give recognition to the teams\u2019 Ancestors, Country, and families of today, this game is celebrating the oldest living culture,\u201d Mr O\u2019Toole said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe eucalyptus leaves on Corio\u2019s uniform bring peace and give safe passage on country as the teams go head-to-head in their game of cricket.\u201d<\/p>\n This year\u2019s Indigenous game will hopefully set plans in motion for more widespread recognition of Aboriginal cultures through Indigenous football games and NAIDOC week contests already take place across Geelong\u2019s AFL competitions and Damian Lynch was wants to transfer that over to the GCA.<\/p>\n \u201cThe plan has been one that the GCA has stood right behind since the start in terms of promoting,\u201d Lynch said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is an event that going forward we will look to be a part of annually and hopefully it is something the GCA will look into the future for, maybe as an indigenous\/multicultural round.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to the match itself, there will be several activities taking place on the day.<\/p>\n A Welcome to Country will be performed by Wadawurrung Aunty and respected persons Corrina Eccles.<\/p>\n Various special guests will be in attendance such as North Melbourne AFLW stars, Kaitlyn Ashmore and Mia King, as well as surprise Geelong Cats players.<\/p>\n Musicians will perform on the day, a radio broadcast will stream live on air, food trucks will be on offer, and local indigenous arts and crafts stalls will be set-up around the ground.<\/p>\n Both Newcomb & District and Corio have Indigenous players within their clubs, only increasing the urge to make this season\u2019s event happen.<\/p>\n Corio\u2019s Anthony Grace has been a huge advocate for the Day at The Den, knowing January 29 will be an important day in the history of both clubs.<\/p>\n \u201cIt feels pretty good to be a part of the start of something like this,\u201d Grace said.<\/p>\n \u201cFor all the indigenous people, I\u2019m sure they would be very happy about this idea.
