Deputy mayor Trent Sullivan congratulated the 22 nominees, saying the awards provided a welcome acknowledgement of the outstanding achievements of women in the local community.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur finalists are an impressive group of women who have worked tirelessly, and in many cases started new initiatives, to make our community a better place for others,\u201d Cr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur nominees are comprised of women from many backgrounds, including doctors, teachers, not-for-profit volunteers, and community support workers who have played pivotal roles in supporting the diverse needs of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
The seven award categories are:
\n\u00b7 First Nations Woman in Community Life \u2013 sponsored by Christine Couzens, MP
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Climate Action \u2013 Disaster and Resilience \u2013 sponsored by Women’s Health and Wellbeing Barwon South West
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Disability Rights \u2013 sponsored by Barwon Health
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Education \u2013 sponsored by Soroptimist International of Geelong
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Human Rights \u2013 sponsored by Zonta Club of Geelong
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Leadership in Times of Crisis – sponsored by Committee for Geelong
\n\u00b7 Women in Community Life for Leadership in Women\u2019s Health \u2013 sponsored by Jean Hailes for Women’s Health.<\/p>\n
Award winners will be chosen by a panel made up of Women in Community Life Advisory Committee members, as well as award sponsors and community representatives.<\/p>\n
To be eligible for the awards, the nominee must be a woman (cis, trans women and gender non-binary people) living or working in the Greater Geelong region.<\/p>\n
Cr Belinda Moloney, chair of the Women in Community Life Advisory Committee, said the awards promoted the valuable and often unseen or unpaid work many women undertake to help others.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur nominees have challenged the status quo to positively change the lives of others in what has been a tough couple of years, and we thank them for all their hard work,\u201d Cr Moloney said.<\/p>\n
