{"id":44635,"date":"2022-03-02T04:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T17:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=44635"},"modified":"2022-02-22T14:38:11","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T03:38:11","slug":"warralily-shoalhaven-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/warralily-shoalhaven-park\/","title":{"rendered":"On the trail: Bike track a highlight of Warralily\u2019s new park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARMSTRONG Creek\u2019s newest playground includes a downhill mountain bike trail, which is designed with varying challenges to cater for novices through to advanced riders.<\/p>\n<p>Only the second of its kind in the City of Greater Geelong, the trail in the $1.6 million Shoalhaven Park in the Warralily Grange estate will cater to the growing popularity of mountain biking as a sport and recreational activity in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Oberon High School teacher and cross-country mountain biker Thomas Ovens and some of his students helped to christen the trail at Shoalhaven Park when it officially opened on Wednesday last week.<\/p>\n<p>Having started his elite sports career as a kid riding a pushbike with friends in Moriac, Mr Ovens said it was incredibly important for children to have outdoor spaces to get outside<br \/>\nand enjoy being physically active.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime spent with friends is also important for their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMountain biking is a great activity to bring kids together and is becoming a bigger community sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTowns are starting to see the benefits of dedicated trails and this one will be great for local kids, who also have the benefit of a network of cycling paths to get here safely from their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Mountain Bike Club president Alan Flaherty said it was great to have tracks in the community that children can access themselves from home, without parents needing to<br \/>\ndrive them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about getting more people out on their bikes, having a go and having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44637\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44637\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44637\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-7-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-7-2.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-7-2-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Warralily director Gideon Kline, Warralily project manager for urban design Jeremy Minter and City of Greater Geelong councillor Ron Nelson in one of the play spaces at Shoalhaven Park.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 7500sqm Shoalhaven Park at Warralily Grange is the latest community offering in the suburb.<\/p>\n<p>Designed in collaboration with the City of Greater Geelong\u2019s open space and recreation team, the play spaces and equipment at the park cover a wide range of age groups and abilities, particularly teens to reflect the demographic of the area.<\/p>\n<p>The grassland-themed playground, based on Warralily\u2019s popular Mirambeena Park on the eastern side of Armstrong Creek, also includes a basketball\/netball quarter court, skating features and kickabout space, plus slides, swings, nets and climbing structures.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of Warralily\u2019s urban design philosophy to recognise the importance of green spaces to make neighbourhoods better places to live, work and play.<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong councillor Ron Nelson joined Warralily director Gideon Kline and Warralily project manager for urban design Jeremy Minter at the official opening to plant a river redgum, a tree species indigenous to the Mount Duneed area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ARMSTRONG Creek\u2019s newest playground includes a downhill mountain bike trail, which is designed with varying challenges to cater for novices through to advanced riders.
