	{"id":44755,"date":"2022-02-26T09:38:52","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T22:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=44755"},"modified":"2022-02-26T09:40:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T22:40:32","slug":"still-focused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/still-focused\/","title":{"rendered":"Still focused"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Two years after initially planned and twice delayed due to the pandemic, North Geelong\u2019s Focal Point Gallery has managed to unveil its latest exhibition <em>Stills Alive: <\/em>still photography from Australian movies, chartering its rise, its fall and its renaissance from 1896-1985.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people don\u2019t realise in the early days of movies, Australia was leading the world, I\u2019m really excited and proud to finally be able to bring this unique exhibition to Geelong,\u201d gallery owner and photographer Craig Watson said of the more than 110 photographs in the show.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Story of the Kelly Gang<\/em> in 1906 was the first feature length narrative in the world, but during the first world war no one was making movies and then it was taken over by overseas interests, mainly Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a small still from what is probably the second film made in Australia, which was Melbourne Cup,\u201d Mr Watson said of the 10-minute film shot in 1896.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original reels were donated to the Australian Sound and Film Archives by French government in the 1960s&#8230; it was shot by Maurice Sestier, a French national who travelled to Australia in the late 1900s armed with a then relatively unknown moving image camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fascinating to watch back now as people didn\u2019t even know about moving cameras so everyone just stood still&#8230; apparently he was waving his arms telling people to keep moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second image in the show is from <em>Death of the Martyrs<\/em>, a series by the Salvation Army which had the first registered film studio in Australia and was shot on the grounds of its Melbourne girls\u2019 home in 1900.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44757\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44757\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44757\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-23-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-23-2.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-23-2-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russell Boyd, director of photography on location in northern Queensland, during filming of Burke &amp; Wills in 1985. Photo: DAVID PARKER<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got four photos from Australia\u2019s first talkie, a pretty unknown film called <em>Showgirl\u2019s Luck<\/em> released in 1931 \u2026 some more well-known films, <em>For The Term of His Natural Life<\/em>, 1927, regarded as Australia\u2019s first epic, big budget, big cast and big budget, it was directed by American Norman Dawn as part of the whole American takeover of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDawn invented the glass shot, where you would paint a scene on glass and shoot through it. He did this at Port Arthur putting a ceiling back on the settlement \u2026 we\u2019ve got a shot of him doing that method on <em>For the Term of His Natural Life<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other films featured include <em>Sentimental Bloke<\/em> from 1919, <em>Forty Thousand Horsemen<\/em> by Charles Schauvelle in 1940, \u201clittle bit of a propaganda film to get people behind the army and Chips Rafferty\u2019s first film\u201d, Mr Watson said.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of shots from <em>Jedda.<\/em> Released in 1955, it was Australia\u2019s first colour feature and the first feature made in Australia with Indigenous actors as the lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we sort of move into the renaissance period so the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s, <em>The Cars that Ate Paris<\/em> from 1974, Peter Weir\u2019s directorial debut; <em>Devil\u2019s Playground<\/em> from 1976; <em>Getting of Wisdom<\/em> in 1977; three shots from horror film <em>Long Weekend<\/em> in 1978 &#8230; a behind the scenes photograph of them setting up the camera for sweeping shot where John Hargreaves gets swooped by an eagle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition contains five photos dedicated to <em>Mad Max<\/em>, released in 1979, \u201cbecause how could you not have<em> Mad Max<\/em>? If there\u2019s one film that put Australia back on the international map, it was <em>Mad Max<\/em>\u201d, Mr Watson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a totally independent production. They raised the money for it from friends, broke all the rules on film making, George Miller\u2019s first film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last images in the show contain shots of <em>The Man from Snowy River<\/em> in 1982; <em>Starstruck<\/em> and <em>We of the Never Never<\/em> in 1983; <em>Coolangatta Gold<\/em> in 1984, an \u201ciron man film about two brothers competing for the iron man trophy and respect of their father\u201d; \u201ca beautiful portrait of Wendy Hughes from <em>Indecent Obsession<\/em> in 1985, a really really nice portrait\u201d and ends with <em>Burke and Wills<\/em> from 1985.<\/p>\n<p>The collection of images has been shown once before, Craig Watson revealed, \u201cJoyce Agee curated the show and first showed it the &#8217;80s&#8230; it\u2019s sat under her bed since then\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s literally held on to it hoping one day someone else would show it and I said \u2018well I\u2019ll show it\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44758\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44758\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-24-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-24-1.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/02\/Untitled-design-24-1-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Filmaking duo Nadia Tass and David Parker, Craig Watson and Joyce Agee, Stills Alive curator at opening night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Accompanying Joyce Agee at the opening on Friday, February 4, was the celebrated Australian film making duo David Parker and Nadia Tass, who together have produced dozens of acclaimed international films, including <em>Malcolm<\/em>, <em>The Big Steal<\/em>, <em>Rikky &amp; Pete<\/em>, <em>Amy<\/em>, <em>Matching Jack<\/em>, <em>Pure Luck<\/em> and the ABC\/BBC mini-series <em>Stark<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the culmination of many years hard work for Craig Watson, who opened Focal Point in February 2019, \u201c12 months before pandemic hit and turned everything to crap\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were open and closed, open and closed, had shows but hardly had anyone in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife and I put what little savings we had into keeping the business going and after a few months got emergency government funding which pretty much paid rent and electricity, but it didn\u2019t pay a wage or anything like that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now that we\u2019re open and hopefully no more lockdowns, we just have to get people in.
