WORK has begun on the permanent home for Geelong\u2019s Health to Health services.<\/p>\n
Geelong Head to Health\u2019s Norlane centre is one of eight adult mental health facilities being opened across Australia through a $114.5 million funding commitment from the Morrison Government.<\/p>\n
Delivered by Neami National in partnership with Drummond Street, the Geelong branch started outreach mental health support services in December and is available to anyone seeking mental health and wellbeing support, without the need for a GP referral.<\/p>\n
Geelong Head to Health will offer support to adults with moderate to severe mental illness by providing mental health treatment over the short to medium term.<\/p>\n
It will also provide a safe place to present for people experiencing high levels of distress, or who are at heightened risk of suicide.<\/p>\n
The slab was poured at 8-16 Station Street about two weeks ago, and the federal government expects the centre will be fully operational by June this year.<\/p>\n
Neami National chief executive officer Tom Dalton said Geelong Head to Health had a \u201cno wrong door\u201d approach so that everyone was welcomed and given the support they need, regardless of their level of distress or need.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the purpose-built space opens later this year, it will be shaped by the conversations we are having with people who have experienced mental health concerns, their carers and families, and local healthcare and service providers, and will deliver a welcoming, inclusive space and a trusted service where everyone is greeted and heard.\u201d<\/p>\n
WVPHN chief executive officer Rowena Clift said Geelong Head to Health was among a suite of mental health support services commissioned by WVPHN in the Geelong region.<\/p>\n
\u201cHead to Health is delivered alongside headspace Geelong – including the new Ocean Grove satellite headspace centre – and the Well Connected psychosocial support service,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt and Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson visited the Station Street site on Friday last week.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur government\u2019s investment in Head to Health centres like this one in Geelong will boost mental health and wellbeing access and support. It will save lives and improve lives,\u201d Mr Hunt said.<\/p>\n
Senator Henderson said the new site would offer a comprehensive range of services at a single, easy to access location.<\/p>\n
