The City of Greater Geelong (COGG) is investigating options for a northern suburbs caravan park to provide cheap accommodation options for an expected increase in tourists in coming years.<\/p>\n
The council has partnered independent consultants Urban Enterprise to gauge public opinion of the idea, which would establish a low-cost camping site and recreational vehicle amenities in the city’s north.<\/p>\n
The council pointed to major northern suburbs events such as the Australian International Airshow, Lara Food and Wine Festival and Geelong Arena events, plus the incoming Spirit of Tasmania port as reasons behind its enquiry.<\/p>\n
The Spirit of Tasmania in particular would likely attract a large number of RV users when the new port arrives later this year. City estimates predict a boost of $57.3 million in tourism expenditure by 2030 thanks to the service’s relocation.<\/p>\n
COGG has opened community consultation on the proposal and has indicated it will table a report for council consideration in May.<\/p>\n
The report would include recommendations for the viability of the proposal, preferred locations and economic, environmental and community impacts.<\/p>\n
The study subject area includes area north of Geelong’s CBD up to the municipality border at Little River.<\/p>\n
As a “low-cost” camping area, any resulting site would likely be low-frills and charge below market-vale rates but could include an RV dump point, which allows travellers to safely empty their vehicle’s septic tanks.<\/p>\n
COGG said its engagement process built on a 2013 report and council resolution to promote the region as RV friendly to encourage greater visitation.<\/p>\n
