{"id":45600,"date":"2022-04-07T04:00:26","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T18:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=45600"},"modified":"2022-04-20T17:02:25","modified_gmt":"2022-04-20T07:02:25","slug":"the-ghan-makes-maiden-voyage-from-inverleigh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/the-ghan-makes-maiden-voyage-from-inverleigh\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ghan makes maiden voyage from Inverleigh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FACED with the closure of his 30-year old travel business due to the pandemic, Geelong\u2019s Stuart Coffield decided to \u201cthink outside the box\u201d and reach out to the operators of Australia\u2019s most famous rail journey, The Ghan, to see if they would consider bringing the train to Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut simply, I had to think of something to survive, it\u2019s been very, very difficult due to COVID,\u201d Mr Coffield said, prior to the train\u2019s first ever departure from Inverleigh station on Tuesday night, on a four-night journey via Adelaide and the red centre to Darwin, with 230 passengers on board.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KQltCFsvl-E\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe train is my greatest achievement in 30 years, keeping eight staff employed during lockdown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, Mr Coffield employed 20 staff, but as borders closed and bookings fell off a cliff he embarked on what would become six months of negotiation with Journey Beyond, owners of the train.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been in the pipeline for nearly a year \u2026 flying over to Adelaide between restrictions. After six months they agreed to a $500,000 deposit \u2026 agreed to give me a charter out of Geelong, the first time it\u2019s ever been done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Running the train out of Melbourne was considered, as it once did decades ago, but Mr Coffield said there were too many barriers to overcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe couldn\u2019t take it out of Melbourne because it\u2019s too long, 1km, for Flinders or Southern Cross, that\u2019s why we\u2019re doing it at Inverleigh, it\u2019s the straightest part of track from Geelong to Adelaide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the route was finally secured and he could finally start selling tickets, they were gone in a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels like we\u2019re living again, growing and doing things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45638\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45638\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45638\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-44.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-44.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/04\/Pool-in-article-44-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45638\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Highton&#8217;s Nick and Liz Windmeyer prepare to board.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s also been a chance to showcase the region, many of the 240 passengers who came from every state and territory in the country had a pre-trip tipple at Bannockburn winery Clyde Park.<\/p>\n<p>From Inverleigh, passengers travelled overnight to Adelaide, where on Wednesday morning many headed to the Adelaide Oval for an exclusive breakfast, a grandstand climb and talk from media personality Ray Martin, who\u2019ll be accompanying guests on the inaugural charter.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Coffield hopes it\u2019s the first of many journeys to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to do more, have got meetings with owners to have discussions about further charters.
