{"id":45873,"date":"2022-04-17T04:00:33","date_gmt":"2022-04-16T18:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=45873"},"modified":"2022-04-12T17:24:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T07:24:11","slug":"inaugural-event-a-huge-success-after-six-month-wait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/inaugural-event-a-huge-success-after-six-month-wait\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaugural event a huge success after six-month wait"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG\u2019S generosity was on full display last weekend with more than 140 donors making their way to GMHBA Stadium to raise imperative funds for bereaved children.<\/p>\n<p>Drysdale-based support organisation Wombat\u2019s Wish held its inaugural Gala Dinner Event after two postponements over a six-month span raising $21,374.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ended up with 149 people on the night, a great achievement considering we had three attempts at holding the event,\u201d Wombat\u2019s Wish operations manager Nicki Dunne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, our three ambassadors were unable to attend due to sporting commitments with Tom Hawkins, Travis Boak and Emily Mannix playing football and netball in Melbourne, but we were extremely lucky to appoint former Cats CEO Brian Cook as our new patron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 552px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/WombatsWish3_89315.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"552\" height=\"418\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Geelong Cats CEO Brian Cook was appointed the organisation&#8217;s newest patron.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The funds raised will finance a full Wombat\u2019s Wish camp later this year where children who have lost a parent get away for a weekend participating in challenging and fun practical and creative activities, which aim to encourage teamwork and build self-esteem and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people hear about what we do at Wombat\u2019s Wish, but not many people know about what we do,\u201d Ms Dunne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what events like this aim to rectify and thanks to our engaged and captive audience at the gala dinner, I believe we\u2019ll have an even bigger turnout at our next event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/WombatsWish4_50822.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"367\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Goods provided by local business and professional sports clubs facilitated the auctioning and fundraising.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Funds on the night were accumulated through live auctions, silent auctions, and a raffle with half the goods on hand donated by local businesses in addition to clothing donated by the Geelong Cats, Carlton Blues and Melbourne Vixens.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Dunne said Wombat\u2019s Wish will host the gala dinner every second year partnered with an alternate event to take place every other year.
