{"id":45875,"date":"2022-04-14T04:00:50","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T18:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=45875"},"modified":"2022-04-12T17:27:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T07:27:16","slug":"locals-encouraged-to-give-where-they-can-for-good-friday-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/locals-encouraged-to-give-where-they-can-for-good-friday-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Locals encouraged to give where they can for Good Friday Appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG\u2019S Good Friday Appeal co-ordinator is appealing to the region\u2019s generosity as the fundraising effort for the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH) reaches its peak tomorrow (Friday, April 15).<\/p>\n<p>Former RCH patient, director of Barry Plant Geelong and Highton father Elie Freijah has been co-ordinating the Appeal across Geelong for almost two decades, a role he relishes given his personal connection to the RCH.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been 15, 16 or 17 years since I first began co-ordinating the Appeal here in Geelong, to be honest I can\u2019t remember how many years it has been, the years just start to blur together at some point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Freijah was admitted to the RCH as a child after being diagnosed with a tumour in his kidney which had spread to other parts of his body, spending 12 years in and out of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>His time at the RCH is what inspired him to help contribute every Good Friday and he could not speak highly enough of the work the doctors and nurses do in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work they conduct is extremely important and what people fail to realise is that they are a training hospital for other local hospitals,\u201d Mr Freijah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo give an example, Geelong Hospital has a children\u2019s ward which has paediatric doctors that the RCH sends down to help guide and train new medical workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just a hospital for Melbourne, it\u2019s a hospital for the state, so people should know that these funds help local hospitals in regional areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 531px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/04\/Elie_60571.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"354\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Good Friday Appeal coordinator Elie Freijah is urging all Geelong residents to give where they can.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tin rattlers are expected to be seen at 12 different intersections across Geelong according to Mr Freijah, who is urging anyone with spare change to give to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to see each year the numbers Geelong brings in terms of fundraising,\u201d Mr Freijah said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we may not be far from Melbourne, we are our own town and it\u2019s awesome to see it come together for the Appeal this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike I said, it\u2019s a hospital for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t come across a tin rattler at any stage tomorrow, funds can be donated to the Good Friday Appeal online at goodfridayappeal.com.au\/donate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG\u2019S Good Friday Appeal co-ordinator is appealing to the region\u2019s generosity as the fundraising effort for the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital (RCH) reaches its peak tomorrow (Friday, April 15).
