{"id":49008,"date":"2022-05-26T04:15:32","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T18:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=49008"},"modified":"2022-05-25T10:17:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T00:17:21","slug":"arts-centre-tops-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/arts-centre-tops-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts Centre tops out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CONSTRUCTION on Geelong\u2019s new art centre reached a symbolic milestone last week (May 18) as developers Lend Lease laid the last beam atop the four-storey structure at Little Malop Street.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremonial \u201ctopping out\u201d of the $140 million redevelopment \u2013 that\u2019s due for completion as early as mid-next year \u2013 brings the cultural hub a step closer to forming the largest regional arts centre in Australia, following the 2019 Ryrie Street redevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeelong Arts Centre will be a jewel in the regional creative crown, attracting visitors from across Australia and supporting local businesses and jobs,\u201d Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Pearson and Geelong MP Christine Couzens earlier visited Viridian, the North Geelong glass manufacturer that\u2019s supplying the centrepiece windows for the arts centre, to spruik the use of local supply chains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49017\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49017\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49017\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-99.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-99.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-99-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson (from left), Geelong MP Christine Couzens, Geelong Arts Centre CEO Joel McGuinness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis project showcases the best of Geelong\u2019s creativity, capability and ingenuity,\u201d Ms Couzens said.<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong company, once known as Pilkington, tacked from making automotive windscreens to construction glass after the closure of Ford and other car companies and has since retooled to become one of the largest purpose-built architectural glass facilities in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>More than one in three of the 600 construction workers on the project hail from Geelong and once open, the facility is projected to create a further 300 ongoing jobs in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The distinct design of the new Geelong Arts Centre is the work of ARM architects, the Melbourne-based firm behind dozens of notable projects including RMIT\u2019s Storey Hall and the Melbourne Recital Centre.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49022\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49022\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49022\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-100.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-100.png 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/05\/Pool-in-article-100-300x190.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ARM Architecture&#8217;s Ian McDougall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Standing on the new Arts Centre rooftop, the firm\u2019s founding director Ian McDougall pointed to the tessellated dome of the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre opposite and said, \u201cwe designed that too\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When complete the performing arts space will house two theatres, an outdoor atrium and dining facilities open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Its main theatre will be able to accommodate large performances including plays, physical theatre and circus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am incredibly grateful to all who have contributed to achieving today\u2019s milestone \u2013 together we are creating Australia\u2019s largest regional arts centre, a cultural and creative hub for all,\u201d Geelong Arts Centre CEO and creative director Joel McGuinness said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CONSTRUCTION on Geelong\u2019s new art centre reached a symbolic milestone last week (May 18) as developers Lend Lease laid the last beam atop the four-storey structure at Little Malop Street.
