A FULL house turned out in support of Geelong’s queer community as part of local recognition of a worldwide celebration last week.<\/p>\n
The City of Greater Geelong hosted a free community event including a panel discussion last Tuesday to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).<\/p>\n
COGG also flew the rainbow flag at City Hall as part of an awareness campaign.<\/p>\n
IDAHOBIT Day is celebrated on May 17 each year, and recognises the anniversary of the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from its list of diseases in 1990.<\/p>\n
COGG councillors and Geelong MPs were among the local leaders to join residents as guests of the event.<\/p>\n
Geelong person and nationally recognised queer rights activist Deni Todorovic delivered the keynote speech at the event.<\/p>\n
Todorovic said the local pride event was proof of the substantial progress the city had made in recent decades toward becoming a more inclusive community.<\/p>\n
“To stand in my home town, the same town that I endured so much discrimination of my journey alongside unfathomable support upon my return four years ago, was truly special,” they said.<\/p>\n
“Whilst there is always work to be done \u2013 so much work to be done \u2013 thank you Geelong for showing up in ways I didn’t know possible.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
